For the next few days I've been living back in my own apartment. The weather has turned colder causing my broken window to bring the chill winds inside. I sit up in my bed and rub my frozen hands together as I flip my multiple blankets off my body, leaving me in my light pajamas.
I get up and prepare to go to work and beg to see if I could work there again to maintain this crappy apartment I hold so dear.
I bundle in with my scrubs, wearing leggings and a shirt underneath them to keep warm. I grab my coat and leave the apartment in a rush to catch the local bus that brings me to Metro.
I flag down the bus as I run down the street, surprisingly earning him to stop. Out of breath, I thank the driver and pay before grabbing on and waiting for my stop to get off. Once I do I quickly walk into the hospital, showing off my ID to security before walking up the stairs with my head down, trying to make sure to be seen by Avi.
Once I make it to the surgeon level I look for my supervisor, Carol.
"Hey Carol." I whisper awkwardly.
"Daeva where have you been?! I've been trying to call you for a month!" She tells me angrily as she sets down her clipboard onto the desk with a small bang.
"I'm sorry." I sigh shaking my head as I bring my hand up to my face, rubbing my forehead. "I was in a car accident and my phone got destroyed I haven't gotten a new one yet." I tell her making up a lie on the spot.
"A car accident?! Oh dear, are you okay?!" She asks, her fury quickly turning to worry.
"I am now, I had a few hairline rib fractures and a lot of bruises and cuts." I explain before rolling up my sleeves showing up some of my scars, even though most were from Maxim, not from recent events.
"Oh dear, I am so sorry." She sighs guiltily.
"So am I for not reaching out Carol." I tell the blonde woman. "By any chance can I start working again?" I ask hopeful.
"We gave your old hours to someone else...but we can work on different hours. I'd hate to lose you as a surgeon, you are one of our top traumas." She sighs, thinking aloud to herself.
"Anything you could give me, I need the work." I tell her.
She taps her fingers quickly over her computer, looking over our schedules.
"You're not gonna like them." she sighs.
"I'll work with them." I tell her shrugging my shoulders.
"The night shift, 10pm to 7am." She tells me showing me her screen. I groan internally before showing a bright smile.
"That's fine! I'll see you tonight." I tell her cheerily.
"Perfect! Welcome back." She says brightly before going back to her work. I smile and turn around making it out the door before my smile drops, and a scowl replaces it.
"Look whos back. Thought I recognized that voice." A voice booms to my side. My eyes widen in recognition.
"Avi!" I say with a strained smile I turn to look at him.
"Where have you been for the past month?" he asks with an angry tone.
"I'm sorry." I sigh shaking my head.
"Sorry? I come home to see you and your shit gone, Daeva! I called and called and no answer. I go to your apartment and no answer there either. I was worried about you!" Avi yells as he walks closer to me.
"I'm sorry okay!" I yell back at him, earning a few heads to turn to us. I grab onto Avi's arm and pull him into one of the break rooms.
"I thought something happened to you. I thought we're best friends, friends tell each other things." He whispers, suddenly getting emotional.
"We are friends." I start to explain.
"Clearly." He mutters angrily as he throws his hands into the air.
"I was in a car accident and-"
"You don't even have a car. Don't spin that shit on me." He growls angerly. "Are you seriously lying to me?" He scoffs.
"Avi, I'm trying to protect you." I whisper stepping closer to him placing a hand on his forearm.
"I'm a grown ass man, just tell me what's going on." He presses but I shake my head.
"I cant." I sigh.
"Why not?!" He yells.
"Because I don't want this to happen to you!" I yell lifting up my shirt to show the small discoloration against my ribs. "Okay?!" I sigh dropping the shirt.
"Daeva? What happened?" He whispers as he lifts up my shirt. I push his hand back down.
"It's not important anymore. You are important to me, and I'm sorry I hurt you by leaving you like that." I apologize sincerely. Avi looks down at me, his mouth ajar slightly before he looks to the side.
"I thought something really bad happened to you." He whispers, his voice croaking near the end signifying his hurt. I look down in guilt before pulling him into a hug. "And something bad did happen." He sighs as he breaths hard against the hug.
"I'm okay, I promise." I whisper squeezing my arms around him.
"You owe me the biggest explanation." He sighs as he stands up straighter.
"I-I can't right now." I sigh looking up at his teary eyes.
"Just promise me you will." He whispers looking down at me.
"I promise when it's safe." I answer back placing a caring hand on his cheek.

Poor Avi, I would've been so worried if the friend I lived with suddenly wasn't home anymore and didn't answer my calls for a month.
