Chapter 26- Emma Knight

“You what?” I exclaimed drawing stares from the nosy people passing by.

            “I told,” he repeated matter-of-factly.

I furrowed my eyebrows together. “Why would you do that?” I asked, completely confused. Weren’t Rose and Sebastian dating on the down low?

“Because,” he started. His green eyes flashed with an uncharacteristically angry emotion and his face became cloudy. “She’s not who I thought she was. She pretends that she’s all sweet and caring when deep down, she’s a monster,” he spat.

“What do you mean?” I was surprised that he was insulting Rose, I mean just a few days again they had been happily dating and besides that, Sebastian was never angry. He was sad and shy, but never angry. I’d never seen him full of so much hate.

He grabbed my hand, pulled me down the hallway and outside to the little garden paradise. For once, there was a clear blue sky and the sun was shining, making it the perfect talking spot. Sebastian sat down in the lush green grass behind a newly trimmed row of hedges, putting himself out of view of prying eyes. I sat beside him, not caring that we were going to be late for class.

“What do you mean?” I repeated, making sure my blue-green eyes looked into his emerald green ones. I’d never noticed how pretty they were or how much pain they harbored.

He ran a hand through his dirty blonde hair and his eyes flicked back and forth, as if he was contemplating on whether or not he was going to tell me what was going on. I put a gentle hand on his knee and he finally caught my eyes.

“She- she killed her,” he whispered. His green eyes betrayed the strength he was trying to show.

“She killed who?” I asked, not fully understanding.

        “My little sister.”

And with those three words, everything clicked; Sebastian’s sadness, his reserved manner, Vivian trying to take back her words. Every single moment made sense. Sebastian was grieving over the death of his sister and he thought Rose was the culprit.

“Wait. You think Rose killed your little sister?! Why would you think that?” That was only one of the million questions floating through my head.

“The day of Ashley’s party… That was the 3 month anniversary of E- my sister’s death. No one besides people in my family knew the exact day of her death because my parents wanted to hide the blemish on their perfect reputation,” he bitterly spat. “Having a daughter who parties all night, drinks alcohol and then dies in a tragic hit-and-run shames them.” He clenched his fists and then finally met my eyes. “But Rose knew. She knew that it was a hit-and-run too. She couldn’t have known that unless she was there.”

I stared at him as the puzzle pieces fit perfectly together. All the evidence was pointing at Rose, sweet, innocent Rose. My body slackened and I was overcome with a deep grief. “Have you not talked to anyone about this?” I asked getting a taste of the weight that was on Sebastian’s shoulders.
