Chapter 13
I woke up feeling relatively happy. It was finally Friday. Cleo was arriving after school! I only had one teeny-tiny issue. I still had to tell my dad that Cleo was coming to stay with us for however long. I’m not sure how he was going to take that. I mean, I would’ve told him earlier, but I kind of only planned this yesterday. So I decided not to tell him and just let everything play out. He would never yell at me in front of a guest and besides, who cares what he says?
I got ready for school and went downstairs where the breakfast chatter immediately stopped as soon as I entered the dining room. “No need to stop talking, it’s just me,” I said, taking my seat and eyeing the delicious food on the table. Ashley glared at me while Kristen ignored me. They had both gone to the salon yesterday to get their hair re-colored, but some people like Ashley and Kristen, hold grudges.
“We were just discussing Alice’s one-month training at your school. She is such a dear,” Kristen said cutting her jam-covered bread. I didn’t know anyone else who ate bread with a fork and knife.
I fake smiled at her and held back an eye roll.
“No you weren’t. You were talking about Ashley’s party today,” Paige innocently blurted out.
My head jerked up from the waffle I was enjoying. “Party?”
“Paige, what did we say about being seen and not heard?” Kristen said through gritted teeth. Paige’s face fell.
“But mother, you said to always be honest.”
“Yes, you’re right, precious. It’s not your fault. Your mother didn’t mean that,” my dad told Paige which made her smile. I rolled my eyes. He had no trouble playing the good dad unless it came to me and Alice. I hated her, but he wasn’t there for her either. Maybe that’s why she was a total bitch.
“So Ashley, you’re throwing a party?”
Ashley scowled. “You promised she wasn’t coming!”Kristen’s nostrils flared. “I thought so too, but Jack said we couldn’t not invite her to a party at her… the place in which she resides.”
I looked from my father to Kristen to Ashley and smirked. Now I had a plan, a party and my best friend. Life was beautiful. “Oh don’t worry. She doesn’t mind crashing the party.”
Ashley dropped her utensils on her plate and ran off to her car yelling,” No one ever cares about what I want! This is my life and I will not let that…” and that just made me smile a little more. We ate the rest of the meal in silence and I was making my way to the limo when my father stopped me by calling out my name.
“Jade, your car’s in the garage,” he said tossing me my keys.
I was absolutely stunned. “They fixed it already? I thought it exploded!”
My father chuckled. “No, just a lot of dents, and parts missing, and all the windows and headlights were broken and the engine had to be replaced. Nothing major.”
I raised my eyebrow and realized for the first time, my father was trying to be funny. I smiled a little. It was a start. “Thanks,” I whispered and headed to the garage as quickly as I could. There it was. My hot pink Lambo as good as new! Life was… fantabulous! I let out the breath I was holding in. Everything was finally falling into place. My dad wasn’t being a douche, my best friend was coming to stay with me and Will was going to learn that I was not a toy today at the party.
With that in mind, I turned on the radio and drove to school. I was jamming to “Good Time” by Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen as I pulled up to school. I held up my ID and pulled into the parking lot singing, “Woah-oh-oh-oh/ It's always a good time/ Woah-oh-oh-oh.” I cut Cameron and his cherry red Aston Martin off and took his space in the front. He honked his horn.
“Is there a problem?” I mocked him.
“Yea, you aren’t going to Ashley’s party with me and I’d like to change that,” he said giving me the most charming smile I’ve ever seen.
“Fine.”
“Fine?” he asked.
"Fine," I replied again, more firmly.
“Fine,” he smiled. “And you look hot.”
“Tell it to the other 500 girls who are dressed exactly like me,” I said walking off with a smile. The plan was just falling into place perfectly. If Cameron was my date, Will would never suspect I had anything up my sleeve. I had history first and it was uber boring. Like why focus on the past? So I spent the class trying to talk to Rosie, who for some reason wanted to pay attention. I was so glad when the bell rang freeing me from the agony.
“Can you please not distract me next history class?” Rosie asked.
“Why? It’s a boring class.”
“Some people actually enjoy learning about what our ancestors did.”
I sighed. “Sorry, I have a smaller attention span than usual because of the party today. Are you coming?”
Rosie fell silent for a bit. “I’m not invited.”
“Neither am I. So are you coming? I mean you are dating-”
Rosie gave me the most petrified look I’d ever seen, so I stopped it there. She heaved a sigh of relief. “Don’t even mention it to me! And how can you not be invited? It’s at your house?”
“Ashley hates me,” I replied matter-of-factly.
“True.”
“So, will you come?”
“I don’t know… Today’s…”
“Today’s what?”
“I’ve gotta-”
“Oh no, you don’t. Spill.”
Rosie looked around, left and right nervously. “I’m not supposed to talk about this, but…”
