You breathed in, readying your bow as you aimed to take your shot. Closing your eyes you let go of the string and hold your breath, only releasing it and opening your eyes when you hear the thump of the arrow hitting the target.
Seeing that you had hit the line just between the middle and the ring next to it, you sigh while the rest of the competitors clap. You knew that you definitely weren’t going to get first place with Kate Bishop, also in the competition, but you could have at least tied if you’d gotten the last bullseye.
You turned to see said girl smiling at you, smiling back you tried not to think about how much your finger hurt from the string. After the awards ceremony you left to get your arrows and get changed
After doing so and grabbing your bag you mentally prepare yourself for walking in the cold winter air. You turn at the sound of someone calling your name from behind you.
“(Y/N), Hi! Wait up.” It was surprising to turn around and see Kate Bishop running at you, still dressed in her competition gear with her quiver bouncing as she ran towards you.
Smiling at her, you move a few steps to the side so that she wouldn’t trample you, “Hey! Are you okay?”
After taking a few minutes to catch her breath she straightened her spine to tell you, “I’m fine, I just wanted to congratulate you on second place.” You stared at the girl with a puzzled look, it should be you congratulating her considering how she beat you.
“Thanks but I should really be congratulating you, it was amazing what you did out there.” You didn’t think it was possible but Kate’s smile got bigger with your compliment. The two of you stood there for a moment until she looked out the doors behind you. “I didn’t realize it was supposed to rain tonight, I forgot my umbrella!”
You turned to see that it was in fact raining quite aggressively, grateful that you remembered to bring your umbrella. Thinking ‘what could be the worst that happens’ you offer to walk her home. “Really? I live just a few blocks down so if it isn’t too much of a hassle I’d really appreciate it.”
“It’s no hassle at all, besides I would be getting my steps in so it’s a win-win.” She chuckles at your joke and then immediately looks down like she’s just realized she's still in her competition uniform.
“Let me go get changed and then we can leave.” As she jogs back to the changing room you can’t help but watch her ponytail as it sways back and forth.
Not even ten minutes later she’s walking out of the changing room, that giant smile still planted on her face though she was looking down at her phone. You couldn’t help but think she looked quite good in her jeans, sweater, and checkered pea coat. Fixing the strap on your bag she finally reached you. “All good to go?”
Putting her phone away she looks up at you, “Yup, just had to make sure everything was okay at home.”
Outside underneath the awning you open your (F/A) umbrella (A gift from one of your friends for your birthday two years back). Going to take a step out into the rain you’re stopped when Kate clears her throat. Turning to her she gives you a small smile “I’m not saying you have to or anything but would you maybe wanna get coffee together sometime? Unless you don’t then that’s perfectly fine.” Her voice exuded confidence.
You laugh a little at how flustered she became and nodded your head, “I would love to.”
After hearing your answer Kate perked up and that same giant grin returned to her face. Linking arms, you and Kate start out on your, or what you hoped was, a date. Your umbrella shielding the two of you from the rain as both of you shared stories about your lives.
