CHAPTER FOUR
It was a regular Wednesday. Wednesdays were often boring, normal, and mundane. Nothing exciting ever happened on Wednesday.
School was the same; it was pointless. The day was just like any other, not even another kiss from Kiyoshi to make Kaito feel excited. The only interesting thing that happened was after school.
Kaito got a text from a girl named Sophie. This was normal for him. He often got texts from girls at school, this one was just slightly different. Sophie had asked if Kaito would talk to him after school. Kaito said yes. He didn't want to be rude, and he had no reason not to talk with Sophie. So he replied to her text saying, "i'll talk 2 u. meet me @ the flagpole after skool."
School had just ended and Kaito was waking to the flagpole. He could see Sophie was already there waiting. When she saw Kaito she smiled and waved, just as most of the girls at school do. What made Sophie different was the way she flipped her bright red hair. Even Kaito had to agree it was hot (but obviously not as hot as Kiyoshi's hair).
"Hey," Sophie said. "Yo," Kaito said back. "What'd you wanna talk about?"
Sophie hesitated. How should she put this? Maybe she hadn't exactly thought this through. But she was done with people bugging her about it. It seemed as if she was the only girl in school without a boyfriend, and she'd liked Kaito for awhile. She was almost sure he liked her back. He had given her his phone number. To Sophie it only made sense that they should date.
"Do you have a girlfriend?"
Kaito thought for a moment. He didn't have a /girl/friend but he did have a boyfriend. What was Sophie trying to ask? Had she somehow found out about his relationship with Kiyoshi?
"No. I don't have a girlfriend."
YES! Sophie thought. She no longer had to be ridiculed for being single. She had finally found someone who she could love. Or so she thought.
"So, will you go out with me?"
Oh no, Kaito thought. How was he to explain to her that he was gay? That he had a boyfriend? And Kiyoshi had already made it very clear he didn't want people to know what was going on between them.
"Sorry. I can't," Kaito said, but soon regretted. Sophie looked like she might cry. "Why?" she asked. "I thought you liked me! You've always been so nice to me. No guy is ever been so that nice to me before. I thought it must've been because I was special to you."
"Sophie, I--"
"You know what? I don't need to hear any more out of you! Your probably just a jerk anyway! Just like every other boy I ever liked. They just left me heartbroken and didn't even care. Maybe I'm just better off alone."
She began to walk away, but Kaito grabbed her arm. Sophie looked back at him with tears in her eyes.
"Sophie, you're a really nice girl. I don't think you deserve to be alone. In fact, I'd probably date you if I didn't have a boyfriend."
Sophie's jaw dropped. "BOYFRIEND?!"
Aw crap, Kaito thought. He accidentally just gave away his sexuality. Oh gosh.
"Shit, what do I tell you? Well, I'm gay. That should explain it," he told Sophie. "Go ahead, tell me how f*cking disgusting you think I am."
"Why would I do that? Yaoi is adorable!" Sophie exclaimed.
Kaito raised an eyebrow. "Huh?"
"Oh, I'll be sure to keep your secret safe! Just don't tell anyone I'm obsessed with gay couples. Now you must tell me, who's the lucky guy?"
Sophie was acting very happy and giggly for someone who was so angry a second ago. Yaoi must have that effect on people.
"So, I take it yaoi is gay stuff," said Kaito. "As for the boyfriend thing, I'll have to get back to you on that. Since, you know, this is supposed to be a secret relationship."
"Oh, I totally understand! And I will keep this secret!" Sophie saluted and laughed a little. Then she did something unexpectedly. She threw her arms around Kaito for a hug.
Kaito hugged her back. This made Sophie happy. Screw the idea of dating him, he was perfect just as a friend.
Sophie drew away. "So, I'll text you later?"
Kaito nodded. "Sure. Just like friends do."
He watched so Sophie walk away. She waved to him before getting into her car. Kaito waved back, then went to his own car.
He began to drive away from the school and towards his house. But somehow he did not end up at his house. He was at Kiyoshi's. It was unmistakable.
Kaito took this as an opportunity to spend more time with his boyfriend. He got out of the car and walked over to the front door. He knocked. The door opened only seconds later. Standing in front of Kaito was a talk slender woman with stick-straight black hair. He instantly recognized her.
"Hey Mrs.Casper!" Kaito greeted Kiyoshi's mother. "Hi, Kaito," she said in a distinct Japanese accent. She was, after all, Japanese. It was how Kiyoshi had gotten his name, though his looks came from his father, who was just American.
"Is Kiyoshi home?" Kaito asked. "Yes he is," Mrs.Casper said. "Why don't you come in?"
Kaito obeyed. He went straight to Kiyoshi's bedroom. He'd been there enough times before to know where it was.
"Hey, cutie pie," he said, as he opened the door to his boyfriend's room.
Kaito stopped. He couldn't fully process what he was seeing.
Laying on the floor was Kiyoshi. Was awake and conscious, but he was crying up a river.
