CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Amanda's Story
It started awhile back, when my mom and my dad started fighting. I never thought anything of. I just assumed it was natural for couples to eventually get sick of each other. But then my dad started taking it out on Tommy. I'd find him in his room covered in bruises, but he refused to tell me what was happening. I only found out when I walked in on them. My dad was beating him. Tommy was crying, screaming, and bleeding. My dad didn't stop. He starting hurting me too. Me and Tommy were being hurt and beaten until finally he divorced my mom and left us. For good.
I quickly became accustomed to life without my dad. That wasn't the case for Tommy. He started getting horrible nightmares and hallucinations. I'd find him screaming bloody murder, and he couldn't tell me what was happening. He couldn't talk. Nothing he said made sense. I found him muttering a lot to himself. I was starting to get really worried.
I finally decided I needed to go to my mom and talk to her about this. We both agreed it'd be a good idea to take Tommy to the hospital. That's when we found out that my father's abuse had severely mentally scarred him. In other words, it had caused Tommy to become mentally insane.
The worst part was that we couldn't afford to keep him in the hospital. My mom didn't receive enough money as a single parent. So I starting getting money for him. There was no place for me to work so I settled for the worst. I became a prostitute. I hated it, but I hated seeing my brother suffer even more.
Eventually, the problems with my brother and the prostitution all got to my head. I was the one going insane. I gave love to get drugs. That was the only thing that made me feel calm or relaxed, so I kept at it. It only made everything worse, though.
And then came the day my mother decided Tommy should sent to an asylum. She said she couldn't deal with him anymore and that she wanted Tommy out of her life. I was determined to not let her go through with this. I knew brother didn't want his life like this. I didn't want to end it for him, but I did anyway. I didn't mean to, not really. I was high. I wasn't thinking. So I overdosed him with my drugs. I didn't know what I was doing. I didn't know what would happen. And he died.
Lila's eyes widened. "You knew all this?" she asked her brother. Kaito shook his head. "Only the part where she had to get money for her brother. Everything else was a surprise to me. She didn't even specify how she got the money. I think I am innocent."
"You aren't exactly innocent," Amanda said.
Lila glanced at her. "What should we do about this one?" she asked.
Kaito couldn't answer. He didn't know what to do. He'd never dealt with insanity, criminal activity, prostitution, or murder before.
"Hey, Amanda. When you told me about this the first time, you said something about making a deal with someone named Axel. Care to explain?"
"Axel got me money and drugs. He was also working with Cameron. That's how he got that picture of me: from Axel. What about it?" Amanda growled. "Nothing," Kaito replied, pushing his thoughts of Claire to the back of his mind.
"Lila." Kaito nudged his sister as he whispered her name.
"I need you to grab the phone. I'll distract Amanda. Once you have it, call 911. Tell them everything. Then, call Kiyoshi and tell him to get his ass over to my house."
Lila nodded.
