CHAPTER TEN

Kiyoshi played with the straw in his drink. He loved being with Kaito, but he just felt so... bored. Kaito barely talked, and when he did it was to say simple things like "You look nice." Kiyoshi had heard that enough. He and Kaito just knew too much about each other to keep a good conversation going.

"Do we really have to go on dates?" Kiyoshi asked. "We're already friends. Can't we just be in a relationship? When was dating necessary?" Kiyoshi was beginning just to get annoyed. Kaito just stared at his date. His face told Kiyoshi that he was confused. "I guess that's just what couples do," Kaito told his boyfriend.

"Well, screw them! We can be different if we want to! I liked just doing normal friend things. Going out to dinner is weird," Kiyoshi said. Kaito smiled a mischievous smile. "Well I say, once we finish this food, we bail," he said smoothly. "Yes please!" Kiyoshi sounded relieved. He couldn't stand the pressure of this date. It was just too strange. He wanted to be with Kaito, but not like this. He just wanted them to be a couple, nothing more complicated than it needed to be.

Kiyoshi and Kaito had both finished their food. Kaito burped loudly. "My bad," he said. Both boys laughed.

"C'mon, let's go," Kiyoshi said. He grabbed the bill before standing up. Before he could move, Kaito grabbed his hand. "I'll pay," he said. "No, you took me here. It's only fitting that I pay," Kiyoshi told him. "I'm paying," Kaito snapped. "Hand me the bill." He sounded completely serious, but Kiyoshi didn't move.

"Give me that bill, or I'll kiss you. Right here, right now," Kaito threatened. "Try me," Kiyoshi said. Kaito accepted the challenge. He crushed his lips with Kiyoshi's. Around the restaurant, people were staring and whispering. Kaito drew back when he heard the "click" of a camera phone. He turned around, but he never saw Amanda Howl, one of the biggest gossipers in school, taking a photo of the couple's kiss.

Kiyoshi was still smiling from the embrace of the kiss. His face felt hot and flushed. "You can take the bill now," he said, handing it to Kaito. His boyfriend smirked. "You know it," he said.

It didn't take long for Kaito to pay, so the boys had left in only a few minutes. They took off in Kaito's car. They were going to go back to his house. "Then we can have some real fun," Kaito had said. He winked at Kiyoshi, only causing the shy boy to blush some more. "You're so cute!" Kaito kept saying.

Kaito was disappointed to find someone waiting for them when they arrived at his house. The figure in the driveway was Kaito's mother, and she did not look happy.

Kaito parked the car. He climbed out nervously, yet curious as to what his mother wanted. "Hey, Ma," he said. "Hello son," she replied with a stern voice. "Is something wrong?" Kaito asked. His mom just sighed. "Come in," she said. "Bring Kiyo too. We need to talk."

Kiyoshi followed Kaito inside. He appeared to be very worried, and he was. Kaito felt the same. What could his mother possibly need to talk about? With both of them? She hadn't even found out about their relationship yet.

Kaito's mother sat down on a long sofa. "Take a seat," she told the two boys. They obeyed, still both curious and nervous. "Mrs.White, what's going on?" Kiyoshi asked Kaito's mother.

Mrs.White swallowed. "I don't know how I can say this, but... you two can no longer be together."

Neither boy expected anything like this. Kiyoshi appeared horrified. Kaito was perplexed. "Huh?" was all he said. Mrs.White didn't look any happier than them.

"Lila informed me about your situation. She couldn't get her stupid excuses for your absence past me, so I quickly caught on. But this couldn't be a worse time to start a relationship. Kaito, me and your father are getting a divorce."

Kaito's jaw dropped. He didn't understand what he was hearing. Kiyoshi saw his worried face and comforted him with a hug. It helped Kaito feel a little better, but everything still felt so sudden.

"You and Pops never seemed to ever fight. What started this? And what does that mean for us?" Kaito asked. By "us" he meant Kiyoshi and himself. How would this affect them?

Mrs.White winced. Tears came to her eyes as she explain to her son: "I never saw it coming either. It's like one day we just woke up and realized we no longer loved each other. I didn't want to feel that way, but I did. We never said anything to you because we didn't want to drag you and Lila into our mess. I'll remain the legal guardian of both you and your sister when this is over. But it also means we're moving away."

This hit Kiyoshi like a gunshot. If Kaito moved away, everything would change. He would lose his first and only friend, his boyfriend even. Kaito looked just as torn. He and Kiyoshi had just began to actually date, but they loved each other. It felt too soon for that to just end.

"Where would we move to?" Kaito asked. His voice shook as he spoke. He just hoped they wouldn't be moving far.

His mother closed her eyes tightly, as if it were too painful to look at her son. "We'll be going to California to live with Gram and Gramps," she said, quietly.

Kiyoshi's eyes widened with horror. They currently lived in New Jersey. California was on the complete opposite side of the country. Long distance relationships were always tough and short. Kiyoshi and Kaito had no chance of lasting much longer.

Kaito swallowed. It hurt to talk, but he did anyway. "When will we move?" he asked. "Not until March," Mrs.White said. "We'll stay here until then. I talked to your father, he says it's okay. Please just know I'm so sorry for bringing this down on you two. Lila and your friend Sophie both already know."

Kaito grabbed Kiyoshi's hand. He held it tightly. "We still have this month together," he said, with the smallest bit of hope. "We still have now. We'll make it count. I'll do anything to make our last weeks together our best."

Kiyoshi smiled slightly at his boyfriend's confidence. "Ya, we have now, and that's what matters. We'll make our time together worth it."

Kaito was determined to start now. He led Kiyoshi to his bedroom and they both entered. Kaito locked the door. He took off all his extra layers of clothing, so he was just in his skinny jeans. "Let's make our time worth everything," he said, before pulling Kiyoshi down on top of him.
