Brad woke to Bre's alarm and reached across her to turn it off. He had serious doubts about her making it through work today but also knew she would need to find a sub if she couldn't, which would take some planning.
He flipped on the lamp and she didn't stir. She had barely moved all night, only waking him once by rolling off of him onto her back, but she stayed on his arm, so he simply rolled to his shoulder and wrapped his other arm back around her.
Her head was facing him. He moved some stands of hair out of her face. He liked how soft it was and he liked the way she looked when she wasn't trying to be so put together.
"Bre?"
Her eyelids fluttered.
"Baby, you need to either get to work or figure out what to do if you can't".
She moaned and her forehead wrinkled.
"I can't. I want to stay here", she mumbled, scooching closer against him.
He smiled in spite of himself. "Well, you can if you get someone to cover your classroom", he said.
She groaned and rolled over, grabbing her phone off the nightstand and immediately dropping it on the floor.
"Nooooo...", she moaned.
"I got it", he said, getting up. Maggie immediately stood and waited expectantly by the bedroom door. She had been laying on the floor on his side of the bed. He patted her head, retrieved Bre's phone, and helped her sit upright.
Her eyes were squeezed shut and she was swaying. She grabbed his thigh and squeezed it.
"I feel dizzy", she said, sounding shaky.
"I gotcha", he said. "Sit here for a moment".
"Ohhh, bathroom", she said, suddenly lurching up to stand.
Brad half carried her as she stumbled to the toilet and she made it. Barely.
"You are not going work", he said. "What can I do to help you get your classroom covered?"
"I just need to make some calls", she said weakly as he stood her up.
She brushed her teeth and splashed water on her face while Brad held her hair back again. Her hand was shaking as she tried to put her toothbrush away. He put his hand over hers and guided it in, catching her reflection in the mirror. The relief and gratitude that flashed over her face was undeniable.
"I'm going to kill Steve for doing this to you", he growled.
She met his eyes in the mirror. "I'll be okay", she said. He said nothing but guided her back to the bed and handed her the phone. As she was making her calls he texted Andy.
Steve's a dumbass. Told Bre last night that her wedding ring was the one he proposed to Paige with. She kicked him out. He's at our house. I'm here and she's pretty rough. Puking. I want to sit here unless she can get someone else to be with her.
Andy replied fairly quickly, I don't need you. Take care of her and kick his ass when you get a chance.
He replied, With pleasure.
He also texted Paige a summary of where they were at.
...........................................................................
I woke up to Steve's alarm going off and was momentarily confused about being on the couch, then everything came rushing back to me. I felt awful. The two of them had just helped Brad and I get back together, and now they were fighting. Because of Steve and I. Again.
