June, 2014
Taehyung heaved another scoop of ice from the ice box into the bucket before closing the lid and using all his strength to drag the bucket into the bar area, where other baristas were rushing around making drinks, and the whole place was a giant dome of sound; steam wands of milk steamers hissing away, the whirring sounds of the old espresso machines pouring shots into the glasses, baristas calling orders out into the cafe for waiting customers. Taehyung dumped the ice into the ice holder in cold bar and wiped the sweat off his brow with the back of his hand. He'd requested to just do chores today, as it was one of the hottest days in June, and the last thing he wanted was to be stuck at the warm bar, melting his face off.
"Taehyung, can you please make a drink or two? We're falling behind without you on bar," Eun-Sol said, her voice strained as she struggled with finding the right size lid for the drink she'd finished.
Taehyung sighed. Out of all the baristas working today, he'd been here the longest, and had the most experience behind the bar. He'd gotten the job four years ago, when he was fifteen, when his uncle first opened the cafe and needed a helping set of hands. Everyone here looked up to Taehyung, even those older than him. It felt nice to be respected, but that also meant Taehyung was drained most of the time from having to help everyone with everything, or from doing tasks above his pay grade. Taehyung worked at the cafe everyday after school, always five hour shifts, and when he got home he'd make his siblings and his halmoni some supper and then tidy the house before putting everyone to bed. In the mornings, he'd get up three hours early for school and work on the farm with his parents, then wake his siblings up, feed them, and put them on the bus to school. His highschool was much closer to his house, so once he'd sent the kids off, he'd meet his best friend Yoongi at his house down the street, and they'd walk to school together. Taehyung had become good at multitasking and managing the money for his family, and half his income always went to feeding and caring for his siblings, and the other half went to his savings. He also got incredible grades at school, too. He was always the top of his class, not that his parents ever had the time to notice, or to care. He'd graduated last week, with honours, but his mother didn't even bother to congratulate him. His appa and halmoni bought him a cake though; which was nice.
He grabbed a cup, and then one more, and began making an iced americano and a hazelnut iced latte. The area where they all had to work was cramped, but Taehyung had gotten used to it over the years, not even flinching now when someone's shoulder knocked into him, or an elbow jabbed him in the ribs. He finished off the drinks and called out the name of the order into the bar. The only people standing there were two young boys, probably around Taehyung's age or a little younger, both staring over one of the boy's shoulders at a stack of Pokémon cards he was holding, both of their faces serious. Taehyung smiled to himself. Seeing them reminded him that he had a limited edition 2002 Pokémon trainer card he wanted to trade with Yoongi.
He looked at the name of the drink again, deciding to try to get their attention again. "Jimin-ah?" He called out, looking directly at the boys.
Both of them looked up, and Taehyung made eye contact with the taller one right away, his chocolate coloured puppy-dog eyes locking with Taehyung's. Taehyung swallowed, taken aback by how cute the boy was. The boy tucked his cards into his pocket and shuffled over, trying to fix his hair as moved to grab their drinks.
"Jimin, your americano." The tall boy said while handing the smaller of the two his drink.
Taehyung slid the hazelnut latte over to him, and as he reached for it Taehyung kept his hand there for too long, and the boy's slender fingers wrapped around his. Taehyung sucked in a breath at the spark he felt, meeting the boy's eyes. The boy's expression mirrored his own; surprised, flustered. Taehyung quickly pulled his hand away, clearing his throat and blushing. The boy looked up at Taehyung wordlessly, his cheeks pink.
