"I'm wondering, are you my best friend? I wanna ask you if this is all just in my head...my heart is pounding tonight, I wonder if you are too good to be true, and would it be alright if I pulled you closer?"

 1999, Daegu

"Jungkook, Jungkook, look!" Taehyung cried, pointing his small finger right in the face of the ugly creature that was staring him down, it's small eyes narrowed on him. Jungkook ran over from the other side of the pond as fast as his little legs could carry him. He knelt down by Taehyung, blinking in amazment at the green swamp monster.

"What is it?" He asked, his voice a small whisper. He'd never seen anything like it. "Is it a frog?"

Taehyung shook his head, pointing the twig in his hand directly at the thing. "It's a toad. These are much bigger, much uglier." He said, gently prodding its belly with the twig. The toad didn't move, instead it just blinked at Taehyung, unimpressed.  Jungkook reached forward to pet it, and Taehyung grabbed his hand away quickly, pulling him closer to him.

Taehyung sqealed. "Be careful, Kookie, they bite."

Jungkook's eyes widened, and he clung to Taehyung. "They bite?"

Taehyung nodded solemly. "And they kill."

Jungkook gasped, whimpering into Taehyung's arm as he hugged him.

Taehyung puffed out his chest proudly. "Don't worry. . . I'll always protect you."

Present day, Daegu

They drove around Daegu for close to an hour, and all the while Taehyung was pointing out his favourite food spots or places that he used to hang out with Yoongi when they were in high school. He was also silently trying to swallow down the heart ache he felt whenever he saw the ghost of Kwan lingering outside places they used to go together.

They stopped and got coffee at Taehyung's uncle's cafe, and sat at the corner table for a while, drinking their coffees slowly and looking over their old photos from their military days. Taehyung wanted to mention that he used to work here, but he knew that if he did, Jungkook would probably ask why he stopped, and Taehyung didn't want to answer that. Taehyung held Jungkook's phone in his hand, scrolling through his pictures from the army. Jungkook, of course, looked incredible with a buzz cut, and even more incredible in his uniform and beret. Jungkook tried convincing Taehyung that he looked good too, but he couldn't keep a straight face the whole time.

"I know I looked ridiculous, you can say it." Taehyung pouted, and Jungkook leaned over and hugged him.

"It's adorable, really." Jungkook chuckled, and Taehyung shoved him away, pretending to be mad. His stomach was full of butterflies.

"Don't be mad at me, Tae!" Jungkook pleaded, jutting out his lower lip and giving Taehyung the puppy eyes. How could he possibly try and resist?

He sighed. "Fine," He said, wrapping his arms around Jungkook's neck and hugging him.

"Wanna go to the beach?"

Bam wandered in circles around the sand, the waves lightly lapping at his feet. Jungkook and Taehyung sat side by side on the shore, watching as the dog happily sniffed around for clams. It was cold, but the two both ate double chocolate ice cream in  waffle cones, their lips blue. They'd been at the beach for nearly an hour, and Taehyung was trying to work up the nerve to tell Jungkook how he felt the whole time. No moment seemed to be the right one. Even though they'd basically held hands the entire car ride, it still seemed to Taehyung like rejection was inevitable.
