Before dropping me off at home, Ran had given me a large pink plastic bag he had taken out of the trunk of his car.
-Be ready tomorrow at 10.
He had told me. I felt bad about continuing to accept gifts from him, but he never gave me a chance to refuse.
Inside the bag was a beautiful black and white silk gown with matching opera gloves and a slit from ankle to thigh. I didn't waste a second trying it on. To my surprise, it was just the right size. I took a look in the mirror: it was one of the few times I saw myself as the grown-up I was and not as a child trying to be a grown-up, as I used to feel. The dress was daring and way out of my comfort zone, but even I couldn't deny how good it looked on me.
It was now the next day and I was getting ready. I didn't even know where Ran was going to take me, but the dress told me it would probably be somewhere fancy. I didn't notice how nervous I really was until I started putting every shade of lipstick I owned on and then proceeding to take them off right after, not sure which one would match the occasion best. In the end, I went for red because it went well with the dress, giving a modernized 1920s feel.
At 10 o'clock Ran was already waiting for me outside of my apartment building. He was wearing a black suit with a silk shirt that matched my dress and he looked as elegant as ever. The sound of the door closing made him raise his head to look at me. His eyes slowly roamed my body from head to toe a couple of times, a satisfied grin playing on his lips.
-Way better than I imagined.
I smiled nervously as I broke eye contact, not knowing how to return the compliment.
This time Ran wasn't the one driving: a chauffeur was waiting for us in front of a black car with tinted windows. I chose not to look visibly surprised as I usually did with everything that denoted the difference in wealth between Ran and me.
-Where are we going?
I asked once we were inside the car.
-Partying.
This time I couldn't hide my astonishment. I had pictured a fancy dinner, a classical music concert, but never a nightclub. Mainly because this wasn't my usual party attire.
When we finally arrived at our destination, we got out of the car and Ran lent me a hand so I wouldn't trip over my high heels. He then guided me inside with one hand resting on my lower back. I felt a shiver run down my spine at his touch.
A bouncer crossed our names off a list without even asking for them before letting us in.
This place was nothing like the clubs I used to frequent. Instead of having an actual dance floor, the entire main room was at the same height. A couch stretched along all the walls, with round tables distributed in front of it. Most people were seated, chatting and drinking. Strolling my gaze around the room, I locked eyes with a guy with a long pink mullet. He had two girls sitting on top of him, one on each leg. I averted my gaze when Ran spoke to me.
-I'm going to get you a drink.
I nodded with a smile before he gave my arm a squeeze and left for the bar.
I was still checking my surroundings when I looked back at Ran and saw him laughing with the girl who was serving our drinks, rubbing his hands up and down her arms in an affectionate manner. A sharp pain in my stomach shot through me by surprise, as if someone was pricking my insides with a needle. Was it jealousy? I was used to being alone with Ran, but what if he treated every girl the same way he had always treated me? That thought alone broke me into a million pieces in a second. I had just experienced heartbreak from someone I thought I knew and, although I had promised myself not to be so naive from that moment on, I was blindly putting my trust in someone I had just met. And the worst part was that I was the only one to blame for it.
