There was a knock at the door, Dani looked up from Isla's laptop where she was working on her drugs awareness presentation for PSE input.
"Come in" she shouted too lazy to move to open the door.
It was Christie, she had been in the base at least once everyday over the last week. She had got to know a few of the base students over the month but none as much as Christie."Christie, what can I do for you?"
"Is Isla in?"
"Ms Fosters teaching at the moment. You want to talk to me?"
"Nah, it's alright. I'm mean your hot n all that but like you're still a pig"
"I'm not sure any of what you just said is appropriate"
"Yeah well, don't like talking to the polis. You treat us all like scum"
"We are actually about to help you know, keep people safe."
"Yeah tell that to my Da'. Look. I've gotta sit here right but I don't want to talk to you."
"Okay. Well I know Ms Foster usually makes you tea, do you want one I was going to put the kettle on anyway."
"Suppose. It's milk and four sugars"
"Four sugars?"
"Don't judge me and I know Isla keeps KitKats in her drawer I'll have one of them too."
"Ms Foster you mean"
"Yes PC Woods, Miss Foster."
Dani makes the tea with four sugars, she passes the teenager the cup by the handle and gives her a biscuit. And sits down on the chair across from Christie."I said I didn't want to talk to you"
"Well, maybe I want to talk. It's kinda boring in here myself most of the day. I see Ms Foster for a bit and Mr Johnston and that's it. So it's nice to have a visitor"
"You're weird, do you know that?"
"So I've been told" Dani smiles.
Christie smiles, "So how long you been a copper for?"
"Just over eight years, this is my first school."
"You enjoying it?"
"It's okay. It's nice in here." Dani looks round to indicate the space. "Isla, keeps us in biscuits"
"I think you mean Ms Foster, PC Woods" Christie smiled. "And isn't it donuts you guys like"
"Anything sweet does the trick"
"What about you, donuts, cakes biscuits?"
Christie goes quiet.
"Whatever Isla has in her drawer."
Dani realised then that one Christie had chosen to partly open up to her, and two the girl has nothing.
"Yeah true. I finished the caramel wafers yesterday." Dani smiled. "You want to help me out? I'm doing the drug talk for PSE next week and I'm a bit scared I'll be boring"
"Don't worry the drugs talk's always crap" Christie smiled.
"Well maybe you can help me be less crap" Dani smiled.
"Okay let's see your crappy presentation then"
..."Hey" Isla smiled at the pair on the laptop.
"Your computers shit Miss"
"Thanks Christie, and watch your language"
"PC Woods is this your influence" she smiled and held Dani's eyes.
"No, not at all Christie was helping me make my presentation less crap for next week. When we discovered that your computer doesn't like running animations."
"Right," Isla nods her head. "See you've helped yourselves to the biscuits too."
"Yeah but we left you one" Dani winks.
Isla smiles, "Oh how generous"
"Flirting much" Christie interrupts.
"We're just being friendly" Isla doesn't bite, but she does acknowledges that flirting in front of a pupil is not a great idea.
"So Christie. You want to chat?"
"Yeah, but only if she can maybe go away somewhere for a bit." Christie nods to Dani
"I'm hurt, and we were getting on so well." Dani holds her chest and feigns pain.
"You hungry?" Isla asks
Christie nods,
"how about I send Dani across to the shop for some bacon rolls"
"Yeah that'd be awesome"
"Dani, my purse is in my bag"
"It's alright I'll get them. Sauce?"
"Loads of ketchup" Christie beams.
"No thanks." She glances at the police officer leaving the room."Right so what's going on?"
"My mum got lifted last night. The polis took her to the cells then she ended up in the hospital. In the psychy ward."
"What about Gran?"
"She's not keeping too well. So I have to like be home for the boys getting out of school and this means I can't work. So no work, no money, no food."
"So what would help Christie? When do you work until. I work 430-10 in the chippy. So I don't know."
"So even if I can get them after school care you're still not going to be able to work."
"I'll lose my job" the teen shakes her head.
"Can you not put in a holiday"
"We don't get holidays. I don't know how long mum will be in the hospital either."
"You got electric and gas in the house."
"Some. Think there's a couple of quid in the gas and about a £10 on the lecky. Kelly offered to give me a loan but"
"So you and Kelly are an item again."
"Maybe, its early days. We spoke after the fight the other week and we're messing about again. But she's not my girlfriend"
"How would you feel if I had to contact social work?"
"Nah Miss. I'd rather have no job and no money than have my brothers go into care, even for a short time"
"Okay and there is no other family you can live with the now?"
"Nah my grans no well enough to have us"
"Right you make the tea. Dani is the same as me just milk. I'll make a few phone calls."
"And how does she like her eggs?" Christie joked.
"Not funny and not appropriate" Isla replies sternly.
"Sorry"
