"Dan babe could you get that?" Isla shouted from the bathroom.
"Did you just call me babe?"
"Yeah. Sorry"
"No I liked it, hello." Dani picked up the receiver, "I'm Dani, who are you?" Hannah, as in ex wife Hannah?
"Isla, it's your ex wife will I just hang up?"
"Yeah."Dani walked through to the bathroom. Stripping her clothes off,
"Wonder what she wanted?" Isla mused. "Last time she called she wanted half of the money in our account. Which I gave her, not knowing she kept a secret account and only put a fraction into mine which we used as the joint account. Which she managed."
"You okay?" Dani asked stepping carefully into the bath. And leaning back facing Isla.
"Yeah. I hate it when she gets in touch it always unsettles me. Takes me back to when I was so low and hard on myself. Sorry you don't want to be listening to this."
"Hey I'll listen to anything."
"So I see you went with the avoid Christmas theft card." Isla smiled.
"Well it was shortlisted against one on crack cocaine and another on the dangers of under age sex."
"I never seen that one" Isla looked up.
"No, it read no one believes in the Virgin birth. Keep everything crossed for Christmas"
"Do you think they were taking the piss"
"Yeah I think some were. But they also didn't get the idea that the Christmas card could just be a card it didn't need a crime prevention message. What would your card be?"
"Hmmm" she looked at Dani "maybe something like it is the season to be jolly not rob the oldies shopping trolly"
Dani laughed, "you could have won with that, picture of what old dear with stitches in their face"
Isla shook her head. "Welcome to Inverclyde High. Where the students are shits and the teachers are fly"
"Stop with the rhymes now. I know I said I'd listen to anything but..."
"Hey I could have been Eminem" Isla laughs."So talking of Christmas when we putting our decorations up?"
"Our decorations, have you officially moved in now?"
Dani smiled, "well you offered and rather than make a huge thing about it, I have been doing it by stealth"
Isla smiled, "Good, I can't imagine going back to you not being here"
"Anyway, before you get overly cheesy on my ass. Christmas Decs"
"Well what do you usually do?"
"Cait has them up already"
"It's only the 3rd"
"Yup been up since last weekend, weekend before first Sunday in December."
"Is that an Italian thing?"Dani grinned "no it's a Lipari thing" she moved her leg against Isla's in the water. Isla watched Dani's face, she's going to tell me the story. "Mum loves Christmas, I think when she was growing up initially they didn't have a lot. My nonno, wanted to start his own business and he did but it took a long time to make money. It was just after the war and folks still didn't trust Italians. So anyway, Christmas was when mum was really spoiled as a kid. So she did the same for Cait and I. But when I mean she loves Christmas, she loves it. The house is like a grotto. Everything flashes, plays Christmas tunes at the speed of light. She's got polar bears and Christmas trains and candy canes everywhere. Candles burning, even fake snow sprayed on the windows. You look horrified"
"I can see how it would be nice as a kid."
"Yeah, but she still does the house like that. Last year she bought a blow up Santa and snowman for the garden, and she has fairy lights everywhere. Folk drive to my parents house to see the outside decs"
"You're joking"
"No. For the last few years she has left a bucket out collecting for donations for the hospice, my nonno passed in."
"Well that's nice" Isla said. Reaching up and starting the hot water again."Well, no surprise but, it's not as extreme in my house. Dad would stop for Christmas break round about the middle of December and the first weekend he was back we'd do the tree. It was a kind of family affair. He'd go up the attic and bring down the tree and boxes of decorations and we'd get to stay up late after dinner to put it together. I'm pretty sure we would do it, go to bed then my mum would redo it so it looked pretty. Christmas was always a good time Dad was home for about three weeks which was like longest he was home all year."
