"Hey" Dani knocked on office door.
"Is this work?" Isla asked looking up from her desk.
"Technically no but you have ignored me for the last two weeks"
"That's because I don't want to talk to you" because I don't want to cry and I don't want to look at your face and know how gorgeous you are.
"Okay. I figured." I miss you like crazy. Please want me again. "Isla I just wanted to ask if you want me to put in for a transfer."
No, I can't not see her. "No I'm sure we can be grown ups about this"
"Good" I might get a chance to win her back. "Also, you might want to throw it out or burn it but this was your Christmas present" Dani moved and sat the gift wrapped book on her desk.
"Thank you." Isla, opened her top drawer. "This was yours, I was going to get you a new watch but I remembered that you wear your nonno's watch so I got you something else. You can do what you like with it" she gave her a silver cuff bracelet.
She always knew what was important. "Thank you"
"Can you go now?"
"Yeah. I'm sorry"
Dani left the office and Isla started to cry....
Isla managed to avoid Dani the rest of the day. Part of her missed her. Part of her recognised it was too sore to see her. In reality she wanted to walk back along to the base and kiss her. Sort this mess out. But it had probably gone on too long. Dan's probably seeing someone else already, they can't cope with being single. I miss her. More than I have ever missed anything or anyone. Come on Isla it will pass.
"Miss" Christie poked her head through the door.
"Christie"
"I went to the base looking for you. They told me you have this office now. Swanky"
"Yeah I have this office now."
"What happened with you and Dani? You both look miserable"
"None of your business"
"She cheat on you?"
"No"
"Was she bad to you?"
"No"
"Don't you love her"
"I'm not taking about this with you"
"I don't get it if she didn't cheat and wasn't bad to you and you love her. Why have you broke up"
Good point. "What can I do for you Christie?"
"My gran died on Hogmanay I just wanted to let you know"
"I'm sorry to hear that."
"Yeah, funeral is Friday. Can you take me?"
"No I can't, you can see if Mr Johnson is available."
"No it's alright. I was only asking because my Dad was going to be there. Don't worry about it though." Christie said. Isla could tell the teen felt let down. "I guess I better go"
"Sorry Christie" Isla said
"It's okay I'm used to adults not having time for me anymore" she closed the door. That was pure emotional blackmail, I'm not falling for it, oh god I've let her down. Just like everyone else does....
The first few weeks went by reasonably quickly. Isla and Dani had managed to avoid each other for the most part.
Isla sat at the desk. Today was the day of Dani's Sargent's exam. I don't know if I should message or not or if that would put her off. She had forgotten that she had ordered something online before Christmas. A mug with Sgt Woods on it and a message just for Dan inside. It arrived at the start of the week, I should probably throw it out. She'll not want it, I don't want it. There is already too much in the house that reminds me that I was happy a few months ago. How did I managed fuck this up. Dan was perfect.
...
"Okay pens down, that's time for the written exam. You will now face a serious of questions and scenarios. Please take a seat in the auditorium and you will be shouted when it is your turn to be interviewed"
Isla: Good luck with your exam
Dani read her phone. She remembered. I told you before memories like elephants. She heard Isla's voice in her head.
"You okay?"
"Yeah" Dani looked up at the woman sitting across from her.
"This your first attempt" the brunette checked her out.
"Yeah. You?"
"Second." The woman smiled. "Eilidh"
"Dani"
"So where you based?"
"Greenock, you?"
"Glasgow. Look I know this might be really forward but I may as well just ask. As might not run into you again. You fancy going for a drink after this?"
Dani smiled, "I've got a complicated thing going on at the moment. My partner dumped me Christmas Eve and I deserved it. You wouldn't get a fair chance. Sorry"
"No, honesty is good."
Dani smiled. "She just messaged to wish me well"
"She must still think about you too"
Dani looked up. "Hope so. I asked her to marry me then didn't wait for an answer. I got stupid scared and was an prick . So she dumped my ass"
"Seems a bit extreme"
"No I said something I shouldn't have said. Somehow the proposal created this perfect storm that played into both our insecurities"
Eilidh nodded a bit glazed. "Yeah it happens"
"Sorry. I'm sure you just wanted a nice conversation and a drink. You don't need this eh?"
"It's okay." Eilidh smiled. "I'm not long single either. So I know where you are at. But I think I'm a bit further along than you."
"Yeah. I don't want anyone but Isla. I think I'm going to here for a while yet, she was the one"
"Were you together long? Stupid question when you wanted to marry her"
"No. We met last summer, and we'd been going out about two months"
Eilidh raised her eyebrows.
"I know what your thinking but. I think she was the woman that I am meant to spend my life with. Fate brought us together, we instantly clicked. Maybe we just moved everything too fast and forgot to address our hang past ups."
"Yeah maybe. Look I hope it works out. They just called my name".
"Good luck" Dani said. I bet I just came across like a crazy person. She read Isla's message again.
