"You heard the news?" Sam was on them the second they walked into the teachers lounge.
Isla looked at him, "literally just in Sam not heard a thing."
"Gerry is leaving, retiring. But word has it the board of governors and council officials have given him the boot over the inspection report. Said it's bad management"
"Well it is bad management or no management at all. You know he left Dani to take the group to Manchester on her own last week, while I had to wait behind with Christie on one of the team from her house coming to get her from the station at 8am. Then there was the stuff with the broken arm the other week."
"And also pretty sure there are a couple of pushers picking up drugs from one of the local gangs outside." Dani added, then walked away to get coffee.

"Yeah well true. Do you think Indiana Jones will get the job"
"Oh undoubtedly." Isla smiled, "he was probably the one who forwarded the report to the governors. I mean Gerry is a useless prick but at least he's a transparent useless prick. Harrison's a sneak."
"Would you go for deputy head then?"
"No don't think so. Don't think I could work any closer with Harrison. Also think I'm maybe a bit young yet for them to consider"
"No. Your what nearly forty,"
"Fuck you! I'm thirty-four. I'll fucking 40 you!"
Sam laughed. "So how was the trip anyway"
"Horrendous. One broken hand, one stropey teenager. A room party to break up and" Isla moved closer and whispered "and I had to pretend I had a sore back for the last two days"
Sam looked puzzled
"Dani will give you a laugh later"

"Right listen up." It was Gerry. "Most of you will have probably already heard that I am going to retire at the end of term. So em the Christmas night out will double as a retirement do. I'll be bringing my wife. So you are all welcome to bring your partners. The council have agreed to a dinner dance at the town hall. So we should all have a nice evening. There is no need for gifts but if you are getting something please remember I hate golf. That's everything" he left the teachers lounge. There was more muttered rabble than usual until the warning bell then just as programmed the teachers all left in relative silence to their classrooms.

"See you second" Dani smiled at Isla.
"Yeah, catch you soon"
"Dani! Wait up" it was Tracey. "So you bringing someone to the dance?"
"I didn't know I'd be invited, thought it would be teachers only." Dani replied as they walked the corridor.
"Well would you like to come with me?"
"Sorry Tracey. I have a partner"
"Oh, okay. Sorry I thought you were single".
"No I'm most certainly taken. I'm sure you'll find a date." Dani unlocked the base door.

Phone station see if tox report is back on Christie. Invite Isla to the dance. What else have I got to do. Christmas Cards sale for crime prevention group. She looked again at the design they had picked. The grinch that stole Christmas. Quite good the message inside less so. Make sure no one steals your Christmas, remember to keep your windows and doors locked. Merry Christmas. Dani grinned and shook her head, guess this is what happens with student consultation. But at least it's better than the baby Jesus one being visited by three thugs- don't be a wise guy don't take crack this Christmas. She was now laughing to herself in the base.
The door went.
"Come in"
A tall lanky, geeky looking guy entered, "PC Woods?"
"Yeah"
"I'm Zachary Greenwood. You can call me Zach. The sixth years are arranging a school Christmas concert and we are looking for some staff to sign up to preform a number. So we wondered if maybe you'd like to be involved."
"Yeah what kind of number? Well we have rewritten a version of All I want for Christmas and the school orchestra will play it and teachers and other staff will sing."
Dani looked at him, "yeah sign the support base up"
"What Mr Johnson and Miss Foster too"
"Yeah" Sam's going to love it. Isla is probably going to kill me.
"Thanks"  Zachary moved over and handed Dani a printed sheet of paper.
"You're making me sign a contract?"
"Yeah. We're doing this as part of an enterprise program selling tickets so we have to do everything legal and above board. Dani signed the contact.
"Thanks. Can you think of anyone else who might be up for it?"
"Em maybe the school nurse and Mrs Dolan in the office"
"Cheers. You are the first to say yes"

"I'll let you get on with your work now"
He left. Isla is really going to kill me.
I wonder if Kelly Hudson is in school? I need to speak to her about Saturday. I'll go check.
