Chapter Nineteen

Isla and Dean entered in the hotel.
"Miss could you do the registration and I can go in?"
"Yeah on you go" Isla smiled.

Now where's Dani. Isla walked into the conference room. The welcome speeches were almost finished. Thank god I didn't have to sit through that. She spotted Dani. She smiled. And headed towards her table. She watched as a tall, extremely beautiful Asian woman stroke Dani's arm and sits beside her. Dani is smiling back at her.
"Hey Dan" Isla smiled.
"Isla" she smiled. "This is eh Mira, Mira this is Isla"
Isla shook her hand, wow this woman is gorgeous. No wonder Dani wanted to marry her.
"Hello" Mira said, "we were just catching up. Dani was the last person I expected to see here. So you work together"
"Yeah" Isla looked at Dani. She hasn't told her about us. "Since the start of the school term."
"Well it was nice to meet you. I have to head. I'm judging the individual arguments in the economy versus ecology group."
"We have someone competing." Isla said
Mira flashed a fake smile.
"Yeah Dan was saying."
Dani stood up and Mira gave her a hug. "See you later handsome" she winked.
Dani watched her leave.

Hello. I'm here. "Dan, everything okay?"
"Yeah we were just catching up. Good to see you"
"Sure it is. I'm just going to check in and I have to call the school."
"Okay. Catch you later" Dani smiled.
I thought maybe she'd want to come up. While we had some time. No.
"Okay" Isla walked away.
"Isla" Dani shouted. "Can I come up?"
"Yeah" she smiled as Dani caught her up, and the tension in her gut loosened.
"Good I need to talk to you about something"

This is it. She's seen Mira again and wondering what the hell she's doing with me. How she managed to let her standards slip this low. Isla felt sick, she's pretty sure she could feel her heart breaking all ready. Surely she wouldn't do it here, when she knows I've got no one to talk to and I have to see her. But then oh god just tell me. "What about?"
"Me, us?"
Just tell me already. I can't deal with this. "Dan just tell me" Isla looked worried.
"I'd rather wait until we're away from everyone"
Incase I make a scene.
Dani looked worried. They took the lift in silence.
"Dan, is this the bit where you break my heart." Isla thought momentarily about the last time she was opening a hotel room door with Dani. She was nervous then. But now she was terrified.
"I hope not. Might be the moment you break mine, though" Dani looked up, "I need to tell you something."r
She's kissed Mira or something.

Dani closed the door. Isla sat on the bed.
Dani took a deep breath. "I don't know how to say this"
"You kissed Mira"
"No" Dani shook her head, "I told you before I don't cheat. But I have been talking to her about some things she knows about me that you don't and I have come to the conclusion that I need to tell you now. I was going to tell you the other week, but then we met your mum and you were talking about how you only like women and, and well"
"Just say it Dan, this tension is really killing me"
"I don't always associate with being a woman. My gender can be a bit fluid and when I was with Mira, I thought about transitioning but I don't really feel like a guy and but there are somethings about being a woman I don't recognise in me at all."

Isla exhaled and smiled. "Dan, I love you. You. I kind of thought you were possibly non-binary a few days after we met. You said something, and I wondered. I used the term woman because you used it. Tell me the words to use and I'll use them."
"So you don't mind."
"No. I was going to say I don't care but It's not like I don't care, I want you to be happy but you're Dan, Dani or Sherlock to me." She smiled. Relieved.
"What about if it impacts the way I want to make love to you?"
"As long as you want me. We can use a strap, use our hands. Tongues I don't mind as long as I see your face and hear your voice and feel your heart."
"But the other night you said you hated being with boys."
"Dan I love being with you, so however you identify, you are you, and I love you."
Isla thought a moment. "Do you want me to, I guess the easiest way to ask this is. What's your preferred pronouns?"
