"No it went okay" Isla reassures Dani. "They are always like that."
"Oh" Dani had just finished the first crime prevention meeting. It was like pulling teeth why volunteer for something if you have no interest. "They were so quiet"
"Yeah, well you did have some of the seniors there simply to look at you do you know that"
"Shut up" Dani was embarrassed, "do you get that?"
"No, thankfully, I get firsts years who wish I was their mum. But it's an occupational hazard."
"So just ignore it?"
"Yeah but be aware, don't leave yourself vulnerable. So don't meet them alone, don't do anything daft like give them your phone number"
"I'm not an idiot and I have no interest in 17 year olds" Dani was sharp. I'm interested in you. But you've made it perfectly clear over the last three weeks we're just work colleagues.
"I was meaning like for work reasons or anything like that. They will call you at the station. They can get quite obsessive. Hannah had a student show up at our house once. But then again she was probably sleeping with them too"
Another dig. "When you going to realise that I had no idea she was married. Or that she was your ex wife"
"I wasn't having a go"
"Yeah you were"
"Okay whatever you think, not everything is about you." Isla snapped. The door to the base opened. "Miss," Christie poked her head round the door "can I come in. I've been chapping but I don't think you heard me"
God how loud were we, how much did she hear? "Of course you can"
"I'm going to the station. I'll see you tomorrow"
That was Dani's way of avoiding a tense trip home. She'd escape to the police station just after lunch. She would only do this when they had been arguing.
"You fell out?" Christie asked, "wee lovers tiff"
"Christie" Isla was serious "there is nothing going on. Dani and I are work colleagues. We are only ever going to be work colleagues. Anyway Dani is not my type"
Yeah right. I was your type a little over a month ago. Work Colleagues even friends was a push at the moment. "Yeah Christie. Isla's not my type either." I much prefer women who can forgive. "See you later"
Isla looked at Christie and smiled embarrassed. Yeah I'm nobody's type. She felt a bit sad that Dani had left again.
"Sorry Miss."
"It's okay, just stop saying things like that."
"Your kidding yourself Miss. Dani is everyone's type. Even I think she's hot and I hate pigs"
"Stop. Don't call her that"
"Sorry"
"Anyway, thought you were with Kelly"
"We broke up. I never get to see her. Her mum won't let her come out to the port and I have a stupid 10pm curfew."
"What's happening there, with Social Work?"
"Nothing, feels like we've been abandoned. My mums gone into some rehab programme. In the hospital. So she won't be out for another 12weeks"
"How's the boys?"
"Loving it." Christie was teary, "their foster homes great. You were right. I miss them though."
Isla gives her a warm smile. "You want to get out of here?"
Christie looks bemused.
"Well I'll give you a lift home and we can stop get some ice cream or something?"
"Yeah" Christie smiled....
"Pick her up miss" Christie said from the passenger seat.
The weather had broke and early October had served a severe downpour.
"Get in" Christie shouted from the lowered window.
Dani, soaked through, climbed in the back.
"Station?" Isla asked catching Dani's eyes in the rearview. God, she looks good wet.
"Or ice cream?" Christie adds.
"Ice cream?"
"Well it was so warm ten minutes ago."
"There's a clean towel in that bag." Isla offered. "It's one of Daniels but it's been washed.
"Great I'll just give myself a rub off with the dogs towel will I"
Christie laughed. "Rub yourself off"
"Christie" Isla shook her head, "really not appropriate" although she had been thinking exactly the same thing.
Dani tried to suppress a smile. She looked through at the rearview and seen Isla looking at her. Those eyes. "Where we going for Ice cream?" Dani asked. They dropped Christie off at the home just about four.
"You going to the station?"
"Yeah. I have some things I need to write up from the weekend. Then I have the counsellor."
"Good. I'm glad you're doing that"
"Isla. Did you mean what you said earlier?"
"What?"
"That I'm not your type?"
"Dan, I think you know the answer to that. But I that's ships sailed. I can't get over it. So although I know that you did nothing wrong I can't stop seeing you together. I can't be anything more to you than a friend. I'm sorry. I don't want you to be confused or waiting on me changing my mind. This, us it's not going to happen"
Dani nodded solemnly. "I really liked you."
"I really liked you too. And it's shit. But we probably wouldn't have worked anyway."
"What makes you say that?"
"I'm me."
"Well just so you know I thought you were kind of perfect. I'm going to go in now. I'm going to come here tomorrow so I'll see you in school at some point."
Isla nodded.
