Isla Foster was way too early for work, she knew this but she just wanted out of the house and away from what had become of her life. She was married, was past tense. The wedding was less than a year ago and already the marriage was over. Her wife, or rather her ex wife, preferred the company of other women. Not anyone in particular. She wasn't sure if that made things better or worse. For better or worse eh, she thought.
She had found all of this out at the end of June, literally found. She walked in on her wife in the bathroom of the hotel lobby with Tracey that they worked with. Great way to end the school year, find your own wife fucking the school PE teacher against a toilet door. She had recognised one set of groans and waited until they proudly exited the cubicle all smiles. She often wishes that she hadn't waited as the noise, of her wife being pleasured by someone else, haunted her and seeped into her sense of self worth.
But as it transpired Tracey, the PE teacher, wasn't the first in fact she had been the last in a line of women that Hannah had gone through. Both before and after they got married. Maybe if it had just been one, we could have worked through it, maybe. But it wasn't, it was over, but not before Hannah tortured her with details. So I can't satisfy women, she thought as she recalled words like boring, routine, fake-it.
Truth be told Isla had always been a little nervous around physical relationships, and Hannah never really made her feel completely comfortable, maybe because she had so much less experience than her ex wife. Who knows. All She knew this morning was that she didn't want to be thinking about this.
Thankfully, Hannah had changed jobs and now taught at a school in Edinburgh. But Isla had to go back to Greenock and face the knowing looks and the pity. This week from the teachers but next week when the students went back, them too expect more ridicule as they all enquire as to why Mrs Overton is now Ms Foster again.
So while she didn't want to be home, she didn't want to be at work any earlier than she had to either. She decided to stop at Largs. There was a cruise ship heading into port at Greenock and it was a lovely summer morning. She'd take a walk along the front and watch the boat for a bit maybe get a few photographs.
She parked up her VW golf and headed out into the coolish sunshine. The front at Largs is always busy even before 8am the place is awash with dog walkers.
She looked back along the prom towards the town. It was a postcard, she snapped a picture of the church steeple, world-famous ice cream parlour and ferry port. The ferry was in-situ too. Good photo, she might try to paint it at some point.
She looked out at the wash and waves created by the cruise ship which was passing half way between the shore line and the island of Cumbrae at the other side. There appeared to be some seals out there this morning. She was glad she had stopped.
...
"Mol!" Danielle Woods, Dani to almost everyone except her mother, shouts on the Spaniel which has made for the waves. Across the stone beach "Molly". Dani and the dog were enjoying the last few days of her holidays before she started her new role.
She, has been in the police for eight years but had transferred over to the community team six months ago. After being stabbed in her abdomen just where the stab vest stopped, typical. She was fine. But at the behest of her over protective Italian mother she had transferred to the new 'safer' unit which Dani herself felt was actually code for boring. She hoped the new placement would be better though.
Dani and Molly loved living in Largs. She had grown up at the seaside, but at the other side of the county in Dunbar. They lived with Cait, her sister and her husband, Billy. Dani knew that they were looking to start a family soon and Molly and her, would have to find a place of their own.
