"I'm really worried, you know," I said, as I sat on the railings of the wooden fence at the back of our house.

"Why?" Seth asked, looking up at me. He was leaning against the fence beside me, munching on an apple.

"What if I mess up on the competition?" I allowed the orange rays of the sun illuminate my face.

"That'd be quite a show. Remind me to bring a video camera so I can capture it." He laughed lightly.

"You're not helping. Can't you see I'm in a dilemma here?" I put my hands in my hair and I squeezed it.

"Oh, you were serious?" Seth's tone changed.

"Of course I'm serious. Seth, I'm really worried," I repeated. "I wanna win this competition so bad because I want our parents to be proud of me. They're rarely here, and when they do come home, it just so happens that this competition is in line with it. This is my chance to show them that I'm working really hard."

"Well, why are you worried? What made you doubt yourself? You never do," he noted.

"Amy told me about this one participant. She described him as if he was exceptionally good, and...I feel threatened and anxious."

"Phoebe, threatened? Since when?" He narrowed his eyes at me. It was nice to know that someone believed in me so much.

"You heard my practice earlier. It was even worse than yesterday. And the competition's just less than ten days away. I'm never gonna make it to the top three."

"You know what? The only reason why you kept on making those mistakes earlier was because you also kept on thinking about this opponent. So what if he's good? You're even better. Just focus, Phoebe, and you'll be perfect. Clear out your mind and try to think of nothing as you play."

I smiled. "You're starting to sound like a counselor. But thanks, Seth."

"Sure, sissy. But remember, I'll be the first to break down in hysterical laughter when you mess up next Friday." He smiled back then erupted in laughter. I rolled my eyes at him.

Then I heard someone call our names. "Phoebe! Seth! Your parents want you to go inside now! They said you'd leave in a few minutes."

"Coming, Martha!" I called back. I hopped off the railing and I raced Seth to the kitchen's back door.

"Phoebe, Seth, go change now. Your dad and I will wait in the living room," Mom said, after drinking from her glass of water.

I went to my room and opened my closet. Hmm what to wear? I decided to go with a comfortable orange and white striped shirt, jeans, and my plain white Keds. I left my hair uncombed, but I pinned a few strands up in the middle. I was in a hurry.

"How do I look?" I asked Cheese, who was lying on top of my bed, licking her ginger fur. She looked at me, got up in a sitting position and meowed.

"Thanks," I said, giving her a quick caress before grabbing the invitation on my desk. I stuffed it neatly in my bag. I headed downstairs to find the three of them waiting for me.

"Alrighty, she's here. Now let's go," Dad announced, standing up from the armchair and walking towards the door. I was so glad he was gonna drive us tonight instead of Cliff. It was a perfect time for us to make up for lost time as a family.

"When are you planning to give it to them?" Seth hissed in my ear. We sat on the backseat of the car.

"Dinner. Now shut up," I whispered.
