He walked into the living room with his hand scratching the back of his neck. I found myself on my feet. When did I stand up?
"Jared," Maddie said his name as if it was tabooed or something.
He stood across me, just like the first time we met. The only thing separating us was the table. I looked at him like he was some kind of ghost. He smirked. I would call it half-smile, if only he didn't possess this different kind of chakra radiating from him. His stare pierced through me like knife on bread. Gentle yet treacherous. Intimidated, was the word.
Someone was tugging at my shirt hard, and then I heard Greyson say, "What are you doing? Sit down."
I felt my feet lift off the ground and my butt land on the couch. "And put that thing in your mouth before flies land on it," he continued.
Right, I was holding two honey crackers earlier, and one was already inside Greyson's system. My piece, though, was still between my fingers. I hastily munched on them.
Jared snatched a glass of pineapple juice from the tray and slumped on the nearest armchair. He motioned to me with his occupied hand while speaking to Greyson, "You've got quite a peculiar friend there, Greyson."
"Yeah, well, Phoebe has problems." He laughed.
I looked at him unbelievingly. "I do not have problems!"
"If you don't have problems, then why are you screaming?" Jared asked calmly.
"Because I donnnnnnnn'tttt." Yes, that was exactly how I said it. I managed to say it with ease, though.
"Now, now, kids, don't make fun of our guest," Jemma told them off, while she made her way back to the kitchen.
"I was just messing with Phoebe," Greyson chuckled.
"Well, it's not amusing. I'm not a psychopath," I replied with a meaningful glare. Sometimes I don't understand Greyson. One time he would be nice, and on the next, he would tease me. And Jared. There was barely time for an orderly introduction between the two of us, and he goes off giving me nicknames. Shoelace girl? As if the name was nice. Boys.
"So you're the newest addition to the group," said Jared.
"And I don't know you," I responded, sipping a bit of pineapple juice. Dear me, this stuff was sour! I exerted a lot of facial-muscular effort to keep my face from cringing.
"Oh, forgive me." He stood up. What is with his formalities? I was starting to doubt which one among us was the psycho. I mean, this was the 21st century after all.
"I'm Jared Strauss, pronounced as Jah-red. Not Jerd nor Jay-red, and obviously not Jar-ed."
"What did you say that last one was? Jarhead?" I cracked up.
"I didn't."
"Yes, you did. Jarhead, ahahaha!"
"What's her name?" Jared asked either Greyson or Maddie for they said in unison, "Phoebe."
"You can't find anything funny that goes with my name!" I bellowed.
"Oh really? No wait, let me see, Phoebe sounds exactly like Feed Me," he answered.
Greyson snorted, and so did Maddie. Ruthie was toopreoccupied with a "For Kids" version of an atlas to notice.
"Feed Me? That's not even funny!" I cried.
