When I brush my teeth, I normally leave the bathroom door open so that made Maddie walk in on me that night.
"Oops, sorry, I thought no one was in there," she said, making an attempt to leave.
I spat out the water and hastily cried, "No, no, it's okay! I'm done. You can go in, Maddie."
She opened the door wider and entered. She stood behind me as I wiped my mouth dry. We were facing the mirror and I discovered she was intently staring at me. I met her eyes through our reflection. "What's up?"
"What?" She seemed startled of me addressing her.
"It looks like something's bothering you," I mused. She shook her head. "No, not a thing."
I shrugged and placed my toothbrush back on my cup holder. Then she suddenly burst out, "What did you and Jared talk about?" This time, it was me who was stunned. "Why are you asking me that?"
She gave me a searching look. I turned around to face her and opened my mouth in realization. "I see. You like him, don't you?"
She shook her head vigorously. "Of course not!" But she was turning red.
"Ah, Maddie. I'm not good in lying but I can tell when one does. Don't deny it. That's normal," I said. I patted her shoulder.
"Shut up," she snapped.
I smiled at her. "You are pretty obvious."
"You can get out now!" She pushed me playfully out the door.
"Hey, stop it!" My bunny-slippered foot served as a stopper as she tried to close the door. I dueled her with my strength.
"Go to sleep!" We were both clutching the knobs on either sides of the door and were laughing as we battled against each other. I was pushing the door so hard and so was Maddie. It turned out to be some kind of reversed tug of war - bathroom door edition.
"What in the name of Meredith's skirt is happening?" Greyson's voice came out of nowhere. I sensed his humanness behind me.
I gritted my teeth while saying to Maddie, "I'm gonna tell!"
"Ohhh no, girl, you are not saying anything to anyone! Stay away!" she replied, giving the door a fierce push.
"I, ugh, can't! I left my towel beside the sink. Hand it over to, ugh, me!" I grunted. Her attention went to my towel. She freed one hand off the knob and made her body lean on the door as she grabbed the cottony material off the countertop. She then threw it on the floor on my side through the small door gap between us. "There, now let go and shush!" I stopped holding my strength. Maddie, on the other hand was still gruffly pushing, so when I released, I was thrown backward. And you know very well who was behind me.
"Whoa!" Greyson and I both stumbled and we fell on the floor on our backs. I sat on his left leg which caused him to howl in pain. "Ow! Phoebe! Get off me!"
"How can I, since I'm also hurt here!" I was clutching my hips for they seemed to have snapped in two. The impact was so instant that the pain came in a flash also. And now we were looking like two lame people who stupidly decided to go ice skating with crutches.
"Calm down for a sec and stand up slowly," he said.
"What's that noise? Who's crying?" Ruthie came out of Maddie's bedroom and saw us.
"Ruthie!" Greyson said in surprise, as if the most humiliating thing on earth was for his little cousin to catch him on the floor with his leg stuck underneath a girl's butt.
