“Greyson?”

He seemed as startled as I was to see me. “I can’t believe it,” he said, and settled down on his seat beside me.

     “Me either,” I replied.

     “What are you doing here?”

“Isn’t it obvious? I’m going to New York.”

“Yeah, I meant why are you on a plane to New York? I thought you said you were going to California for a vacation.”

I shifted uncomfortably. Here he is with his questions again. “It’s kind of a long story,” I said softly.

“The flight’s going to take a while,” he insisted, a small smile forming in his lips.

Should I tell him? I debated against myself.

     He’s a stranger.

So what, he’s asking you and he’s ready to listen.

I don’t need to tell him.

     Actually, you do.

No, I don’t need any more nosy people.

What’s to lose if you tell him?

     I’m not gonna do it.

Go on, start talking. You know how much you are dying to tell someone. And judging from your situation right now, he’s the best you’ve got.

     Fine.

I was about to open my mouth and say something but he spoke first.

“By the way, what happened to you yesterday? You looked pretty terrible when I ran into you outside the coliseum. Was something wrong?”

I inhaled through the nose and exhaled through the mouth. “As a matter of fact, it’s somehow related to why I’m here.” I looked away from him and stared out through the darkness in the window.

“Oh, it’s okay if you don’t want to tell me. I understand you don’t like to talk about it,” he said.

“No, I honestly wanted to tell someone who would listen,” I immediately replied.

He smiled. I wasn’t the type of person who loved to smile at random people, so I was surprised why I unconsciously returned one to him. Just then, someone occupied the last spot on Greyson’s left. He took his attention off me and turned to our new row mate.

“Hello,” Greyson greeted, still with that smile on.

“Hi,” the girl, who I guessed was 11, responded. From the looks of her, she was quite obnoxious. I’m sorry, but I sometimes judge other people by their looks. I know it’s a bad habit, but I can’t help it. People are too amazing to set an impression.

     “What’s your name?” Greyson asked.

     “Kelly. How about you?”

“I’m Greyson. Kelly, are you travelling alone?”

“Nope, my dad’s with me.” She jerked her thumb towards the man who sat across the aisle.

During that moment, I envied Greyson for his talent at getting to know people. I was never good at it. Amy was the solid proof of my lack of friends. But it seemed like I had lost her too, my only friend.
