I heard someone call my name from behind. I turned around and saw the eighth grade class aka my classmates, getting out of our school bus. Amy was among them. I could see the excitement behind her glasses. I was about to enter the Oklahoma City Coliseum when they arrived.

Amy ran up to my side. "How's it going?"

"I'm completely nervous," I admitted.

"Don't be. We're right behind you. We're supporting you all the way! Some of us even made you banners, look." She pointed at them and yes, I could see my name and the name of our school in the illustration boards they were holding.

"Thoughtful," I remarked. When they caught sight of me, they waved and smiled, shouting "Good luck, Phoebe!"

I returned their waves and mouthed "Thanks!"

"By the way, I have something to tell you." Amy took my hand and pulled me away from the entrance door. I ushered for my parents and Mrs. Blake to go in first without me.

"My family is going to California this summer!" Amy continued.

"Wow, that's great!" I cried happily. "At least you can spend your summer productively. Maybe you'll even get a tan!"

"You know what, my parents want you to come with us, if you like."

"Really?" I asked unbelievably. A summer in California? That'd be perfect! "Tell your mom to tell this to my mom. She's bound to agree if an adult asks permission," I told her. My parents had toured around the US and the world, but I had not been a traveler myself. I had always been stuck in plain 'ole Oklahoma City.

"Alright, alright, I'll ask her," Amy agreed. "Um, I gotta go back to 8-A. I might lose them." She gave me a tight hug. "Good luck, Phoebe. I know you can win this."

"Thanks, Amy. That means a lot." I hugged her back. She went back to her line, and I entered the coliseum. I found Ms. Crane, Mrs. Blake and Mom by the registration table at the far end to the left.

I walked towards them. "There she is," Mom stated, tapping Ms. Crane's shoulder. The young slender teacher with ginger hair turned around and saw me. She beamed. "Are you ready?"

"Whether I'm ready or not, I don't have much choice, don't I?" I joked.

She laughed and said, "I'm sure you'll do well. Okay, now you can go to your seat with your mom and Mrs. Blake and I will take care of everything here."

"You sure?" I asked.

"Yeah, all I gotta do is write your name and then grab your number."

"Come on," Mom held my hand and took me and Mrs. Blake to where Dad was sitting.

We took our seats and after a few moments, Ms. Crane came to us holding my number. "You are number five. And the contestants have to sit at the front. Come, I'll take you."

I took it from her and Mrs. Blake helped me pin it to my dress. "Now remember Phoebe, just focus. Focusing is the key. Don't allow yourself to get distracted. Lose yourself in the music. I believe in you." Those were her last words to me before I gave her a quick hug. "Thanks, Mrs. Blake."

"Good luck, sweetheart," Mom said, kissing my forehead.

Dad took my hand and squeezed it gently. "No matter what happens, know that we are so proud of you."

As Ms. Crane and I headed down the aisle towards the front row, someone grabbed my hand.

"Fib!"
