Chapter Twenty Two The Long Road Ahead

I glanced at the lifeless body of the girl one last time before I begin to cover her with dirt. Tears stream from my eyes and fall onto the ground. She didn't deserve this, none of us did.

Carl and I scavenged the building for any supplies and set off on the road ahead in a heavily armored vehicle. The building had many extra cans of gas so we would be okay for awhile.

We drove down the road hand in hand. I still haven't spoken to him since that girl died beside me. I know it's not his fault but I'm in too much shock.

"Y/n you're going to have to talk sooner or later." Carl looked at me from the drivers seat. It was getting late, and we needed rest.

We pulled off the side of the road and turned every light in the vehicle off. We climbed to the back of the vehicle and put down the seats and draped a blanket so walkers or people wouldn't see us.

"I'm sorry I haven't talked to you. I just, I don't know. I told that girl she would survive and I saw happiness in her eyes. Then she died. In front of me." I winced at the painful memory and tried to push it out.

"I'm sorry babe. I know it's hard. You'll get through it. We will get through it. Together." He cupped my face in his hands and kissed my lips over and over. I couldn't help but smile a little.

The next morning I woke up before the sun rose. My stomach felt horrible. I assume it's from the events that happened yesterday. I felt sick and I sat up desperately seeking fresh air. I opened the door and stepped outside only to find myself vomiting in a matter of seconds.

Carl rushed to his feet to aid me as I continuously puked onto the ground. I have not felt this type of pain before, and it isn't my period. It's different. Something is different.
