Luna's POV

We had been sitting on the cold tiles so long my back felt stiff and ached with every small move. How long had we been staring at the blank shimmering door in Abuela's room? The midday sun shined through her window, with children's laughter still coming from the backyard.

Pins and needles prickled from my feet and climbed up my legs as I tried to force them to lift me up. I winced at the pain, trying to hide it as best I could but Bruno's arms came around my waist in a split second. His entire body pressed up to mine to take my weight. "Hey hey hey..", his hands smoothly rubbed my back while holding me up. How did he even catch that reaction from me while he was on the floor? Too good of an esposo to have let that slip by him, I suppose. My hands braced themselves on Abuela's bed where she calmly sat, eyes also on the door. The tension in my body slowly melted away at the tender rubs Bruno continued to give over my back. Get it together chica, I scolded myself. You birthed a whole human.

A chuckle from behind me shook through his hands and into my lower back. "Better mi amor?", he rubbed lower. It was impossible to not feel better so my goofy self nodded, immediately wishing I hadn't so he'd keep going.

"You think this door has to do with Lily?", he was asking Abuela but his hands still rhythmically circled and massaged my aches. I really really don't deserve him. Obviously he wouldn't have just stopped cause I told him it was helping. That was dumb of me to think...

Abuela paid us no mind, stuck in her own thoughts she watched the door glow and sparkle. "You said the doors only appear before their fifth birthday.", I pushed myself upright and smoothed out my skirt before taking Bruno's hand. He refused to give up, fussing over the cold parts of my skin that touched his bare arm. "Eres un esposo increíble..", whispering my love into his ear and then placing quick kisses all over his face til he chuckled. "I'm fine..", I smiled, putting one last peck on his nose.

Abuela was rolling her eyes, a half smile pulled at the corners of her mouth, watching our little exchange. At this point she should have gotten used to us, having seen her son the night Diego was born, nothing about his ability to care for us would be put into question. I still tear up at the memory.

"A door has never taken shape early, especially this early, if it is Lily's.", her rough weathered voice contemplated the meaning of the door's arrival. The clicking of her opening and closing the pocket watch in her hand was the only sound in the room, like time ticking away between the three of us.

"Maybe it's not hers?", Bruno shrugged as he walked up to the dancing light. It looked as if it reacted slightly to his presence, tiny specks of color drawing nearer to him.

"Or you have a niña or niño we don't know about.... Hmmm..", sassing him back with a tease. Obviously that wasn't the case but the joke slipped out before I had a chance to reign it in. Abuela held back a laugh and stood from her bed, joining Bruno at the large glowing frame that now took up the space on her wall where her wardrobe once sat.

"We'll just have to wait and see. There's nothing we can do about it and it'll only respond to its owner.", her fingers traced the outline of its shimmering corners and then came to rest on Bruno's arm, taking a moment to let this information sink in.

My mind raced, remembering the day of our wedding when Diego shared the lily with me at the fountain, her name the same as the flower in his small hands. Fate could still change right? That idea stung, wanting Lily already without ever having met her. No, nothing would alter this course. She was destined to be ours, like Diego. I had to believe that..

"I'll give you two a minute.", Abuela had been watching me while my thoughts spilled out over my features. An understanding smile graced her lips before closing her door behind her.
