Chapter 21: Day 11: White Out:

By the time Tony and I woke the next morning, the bugs had worked. Tony was up and walking without a limp or grimace in pain. He looked better than ever. The bruising and swelling would take a bit longer to settle down, but it looked to be improving quite quickly.

“You think you’ll be able to walk a far distance today?” I asked, making sure he was up for it. We could risk staying put for a little while longer.

“I’m fine, Stella. Really.” He urged me forward. “Besides, we need to put distance between this place and us.”

“What does that mean?” I frowned, walking forward with Tony slightly ahead. We both had loaded guns strapped to our hips with a few knives we’d found yesterday in our boots.

“Haven’t you figured out the pattern yet?” Tony asked and I shook my head. “Every three days the Council throws something into the arena. A challenge of sorts. Day Three was some Hydra soldiers, Day Six, the army of Frost Giants and Day Nine was Whiplash. Tomorrow, there’s going to be something ugly and the odds are, it’s going to be entering the arena through the bridge.”

I shook my head incredulously. “I can’t believe I didn’t notice that.”

“You weren’t the only one.” Tony shrugged. “Everybody that’s dead didn’t catch on very fast either.”

I stopped walking and he looked behind him. I shot him a hard stares and he frowned. “What?”

“Don’t speak ill of the dead Tony.” I warned. “You never know, they could come back to haunt you.”

“Oh sure, because the Capsicle is going to do what during the After Life? He’s probably catching up with his World War Two buddies right now –hell! He’s probably looking down at us with my dad for all we know.” Tony chuckled sadistically and I rolled my eyes, turning down a dark corner.

It was quiet and cold, I couldn’t see further than a few feet in front of me. There were groans and screeches coming from down the hall, but we couldn’t see what was making the noises –we didn’t even have a clue what was making them by the noises it was making.

I grabbed at my gun, holding onto it tightly. It made me feel just a little bit like less of a scared little girl.

As Tony and I stepped deeper into the dark hall, it felt like all of our senses were being shut off. We couldn’t see. There was no funky smells to warn us of anything. It had become eerily quiet –so quiet I was pretty sure Tony could hear my heart beat.

“What is that?” Tony whispered, but it seemed so loud against the silence that I jumped in fright.

“What’s what?” I whispered back just as I caught sight of what he must have been looking at. There was glow at the end of the hall. It was a soft blue that seemed to pulse like it was keeping time with a heartbeat.

“Shit.” I heard Tony mutter.

“What?” I pulled my gun out of my pocket and aimed. “Tony, what the hell is that?”

“What was that you were saying about the dead haunting us?” He said shakily as the blue glow got closer and I stared, catching what he meant.

It was Nora.

“Oh...” I breathed, taking a step back. “Oh my god, how is that possible?”

“Estelle...” Tony inched backward as well.

“Yeah?”

“RUN!”  Tony yelled and we bolted back the way we came, only to have balls of ice thrown after us.
