Chapter 4: The Interviews
"Today is the Tribute Parade." Saxon declared, bursting into my room, immediately filling it with a light, bubbly feeling. It was a nice feeling. After Clint had left me I'd been sitting in my room thinking about how selfish we all were. I hadn't slept.
All these years the civilians had been worrying about ourselves when this whole ordeal was for the heroes, not us.
The Council was punishing them by harming the very people they swore to save. I couldn't think of a more horrible fate.
"The trick to the interview part of the Parade is to make people like you. The more people like you the more sponsors you'll get and the more sponsors you have, the more help you get in the arena." Saxon said and I nodded.
"The interview part?" I asked. If there were parts that meant something more to come afterward, had they added a new section to the Pre-Games Coverage this year?
"The second part of the Parade is a gala, after the televised interviews. The gala is not televised; it's more or less a way for the sponsors to get to know this year's tributes better." Saxon explained.
I nodded again and slid off the end of the still unmade bed, there wasn't even a dent in the pillow.
I think that's when Saxon really looked at me for the first time since he'd entered the room.
"Oh, sweetheart." He came up and held my hands "Haven't you slept?"
I shook my head and everything just spilled out, "I can't stop thinking. I think it all just hit me last night. I'm not going to make it. I'm never going to see my family again. I never got to say goodbye."
The next thing I knew, Saxon had his arms around me and I was crying. "You're going to do fine, you know why?"
"Why?" I croaked out.
"Because instead of sticking with your fellow civilians you branched out and befriended two heroes. No one has ever seen that before. You've got everyone talking." Saxon said, "Now, let's get you cleaned up. You have people to impress."
The next two hours were spent lying on a cold metal table as Clementine and Temperance hovered over me, waxing and removing any excess hair on my body, as well as plucking my eyebrows and covering my cuts and bruises with a cream that made them disappear.
I was then rinsed off and sent into a room with Saxon.
"I have been working on this since the moment I saw you." Saxon declared, holding up a black costume bag and waving it around before opening the zip, revealing a silky silver evening gown that had a high neckline.
