Chapter 23

Myrtle drank from the cup of nails but nothing happened Instantly, instead she continued chatting with the young lady beside her. Suddenly she felt weird in her stomach, she squeezed her belly and squeaked in pain. The pain was sharp, she felt like her insides were being attacked by soldier ants.

She started vomiting blood and she collapsed to the ground, then her eyes became clear to see her friends who have been calling out to her "guys–he–help " every painful word she uttered were accompanied with blood. "i–don't –want –to die". She was already in tears.

"no please don't..... Don't do this to her please" Charlotte begged but it was too late.

It had seemed like a few of the nails had sprung alive and they crawled their way out of her gut. Myrtle felt paralyzed, she couldn't move, couldn't talk anymore and her last vision was her friends breaking their way through the door but it was already too late.

"Nooooooooo!!!!!!! " Lotte cried out. Rufus couldn't stop the waterfall that gushed from his eyes. Charlotte couldn't cry neither could she move any closer to her dear friend laying lifelessly on the floor in a pool created by her own blood.

Charlotte fell in a trance and saw the figure standing right in front of her "why?!!! " she yelled "you're not supposed to hurt us unless we fail to play your game! " she cried out "why!!!".

"because she refused to do her dare. She got a dare and didn't attempt to do it ".

It occurred to her that Myrtle had left her phone somewhere at home before leaving the house. She was quiet, didn't cry, didn't say anything at all but just stared blankly. She returned back to reality and told her friends what he had said.

They called Myrtle's parents to deliver the news to them and they came to picked their child's dead body. An investigation was carried but the case was stamped suicidal for reasons they couldn't explain. They claimed she snuck in after closing hours to purposely drink a coffee infested with termites that she had brought in herself so there wasn't any further investigation.

They all went back home sobered, there was nothing they could do. The boys were still comforting Charlotte and Lottie when Rufus phone beeped "oh not me again".

"what does it say? " Charlotte jumped out of her seat to seize the phone in her possession but Rufus didn't release it "relax okay" . He read the text silently to himself and you could see it in his facial expressions that he was about to throw up. "what, what is it? " Lottie asked, "I'm meant to eat roaches according to my age" he voice was like he was about to cry.

"That's twenty-four" Charlotte added.

She continued "that shouldn't be a problem Rufus, I can cook it up for you or something, you won't even know it's..... " "alive!!" Rufus interrupted.

He closed his eyes in despair falling to his knees "I don't want to do this anymore, it's better to die than to live like this!"

"Rufus don't! " Charlotte screamed "oh no it's too late"

"what do you mean? " Chase asked placing a comforting hand on her shoulder.

A streak of tear fell down her face "who ever wishes himself death over the game shall be found dead in seven days"

"How do you know that Char?" troubled Kai asked.

She was short of words, she couldn't reply "I –uh..." she stammered.

"What do you know!!" Rufus yelled.

She fell to ground and began to weep bitterly, she knew something that she kept to herself, she was hiding something and it was obvious. She suddenly stopped crying and stood back up on her feet "I'll tell everyone, but not now" .

"What?" Lottie said.

"we have no time to waste, we need to help Rufus with his dare. Rufus we need to find a place to get roaches, I can help you" she said holding Rufus's hands but he jerks free. " what's the use of I'm going to die anyway" this time crying.

"no I should be able to help you, I'll talk to him! I'll... I'll" she cried scampering across the room with tears all over her face. She placed her hands on her head like she felt it was soon to explode when Rufus stopped her "Stop Char, it's too late".

She stared blankly into his beautiful eyes that were already redish from crying so much then she finally uttered "no, I won't give up yet, I won't loose you okay, you'll live. Please just trust me".

He sighed and nodded in reply then pulled her in to kiss her forehead and she complied with him which made Chase a little jealous.

They searched online and found a restaurant that served cockroach milk so they assumed they would definitely have life roaches. On getting there, they met with the chef who agreed to sell twenty-four roaches to them at a reasonable price and they took his offer.

They went back home with the live cockroaches and placed them in a bowl for Rufus to eat.

At first he refused but later complied. He took the first one, it was still moving and he felt irritated just by the sight of it. He threw it into his mouth and munched on it, it was squishy and soft and tasted awful, he wanted to throw up but dared not because they didn't have extras.

As his teeth munched into them, they would burst in his mouth and an attempt to swallow would choke him. He was just at his sixth when he refused to eat any more "babe please we are running out of time!, I beg you!!" Charlotte pleaded rubbing his shoulders.

He decided not to chew anymore but just swallow straight, he swore he could feel them climbing up his throat.

Finally down to the twenty fourth one, he couldn't take it even though it was the last one "Rufus if you take this last one before the remaining few seconds, as soon as the elapses you can throw everything up but you'll be alive, so please" Kai begged literally in tears, Rufus was his dear friend and he couldn't afford to lose him.

Finally he picked the last roach and closed his eyes tightly in the last few seconds, he had about seven seconds left and they couldn't help but to stare at the ticking clock and back at Rufus. He threw it into his mouth and swallowed in one big gulp.

"he did it!! " Charlotte celebrated.

Three, two, one....  Rufus threw up everywhere, a few cockroaches still alive crawling in the place and they made sure to smash each and every one of them.

He survived but for now, it was up to Charlotte to confront the demon and save Rufus.

She somehow connected to him and pleaded but all he said was "his fate will be decided in the next seven days".

"So Charlotte what did he say?" Rufus asked out of curiosity.

She stared at all of them for a few silent seconds before saying "your fate will be decided in the next seven days".

Rufus fell to the chair with his face buried in his palms and she sat beside him and held him in a tight embrace.

Just as they were still comforting him, Kai's phone buzzed, it was his turn......
