"The nature of fatherhood is that you are doing something that you're unqualified to do, and then you become qualified while doing it."
"Do you have everything inside?" Mr. Lawson asked his oldest twins as they grabbed their shoes. Both were dressed in comfortable clothes, nothing too heavy for their first day of school.
Harper was wearing her floral dress with a cardigan on top, and Hayes was clad in a hoodie and jeans that fit him perfectly.
Tobias was glad that they had the time to go shopping, everything that they got was perfect for all of them.
Their Monday started off early, with Maureen waking up at five thirty to prepare their food and bags while the kids woke up before a few minutes after six. To her surprise, it seemed that Mr. Lawson was up before her, seeing him in the kitchen minutes after five.
"Uh-huh." the twins nodded in reply, exchanging nervous glances to each other as they fixed their backpacks.
They were worried. Nervous on what's going to happen today.
It was the first time that they'd be exposed to kids their age. Sure, they interacted with their cousins, but they were used to studying with just the two of them at home.
Tobias was worried too. But his children were clever and brave. They'd be okay.
"Okay... good." Tobias nodded as well and sent them a gentle smile, assuring them that everything was all right.
They can do it.
He fixed his bag as well, not forgetting important documents and blueprints that he'd need. He still had work to do later, but he couldn't pass the opportunity to witness their first day. It was a special day for all of them.
Maureen stood at the side with a smile. She kept a respectful distance as their father prepared them for school. She helped here and there, but she knew how special this day must be for the family.
"Come here, baby." Tobias called on to Charee, who was still sleepy, but held her arms up and wide for him to carry her.
She was excited, but the drowsiness was still there.
Maureen was sure that she'd be all smiles later, though.
The youngest, Nikki and Natalie, were still asleep as it was only seven in the morning. Mrs. Helen was with them upstairs, and Mr. Lawson and Maureen were to go drop off the kids to school.
Maui watched as Mr. Lawson easily carried Charee in one arm as he walked towards the kitchen near where she stood, grabbing the snacks and juice boxes for Charee if she ever wanted them.
"Shoot, sorry." Tobias apologized sheepishly at Maureen when their shoulders bumped together as he was fixing Charee's bump, a shy glance sent to her direction when he noticed that she had a small smile on her face.
She could almost giggle at the slight panic that he was displaying. Turns out, the kids weren't the only ones who was nervous.
"All right, time to go." he ushered the kids to the car where Dave waited, and Maui stayed back to make sure they didn't forget anything.
She sat next to Dave by the passenger seat as the twins sat on their seat, fidgeting. Mr. Lawson secured Charee on her booster seat as her eyes remained closed, catching up to her nap.
The ride to school wasn't too long, and not even an hour later, they were already making their way down the car and towards the school's entrance.
"Good morning, Mr. Lawson." their homeroom teacher, Anne, greeted them with a smile. She turned to Maureen with the same smile, and then to the kids.
