"The things that I want to protect... and the one's who I can't afford to lose. It's them. My lifeline. My children. Nothing means as much to me as them."
"Do you have everything in there? Spare clothes and towel? Toiletries?" Maureen asked, fixing Haye's bed as he loaded everything that he needed on his bag.
It was now Friday, and his sleepover was scheduled after school.
Usually, he'd be the one to fix his bed, but today was an exception. He was so excited for his first sleepover that he was panicking.
"Yeah, I think so." he spoke, nodding towards his bags. One was for school, and the other for his clothes and other things that he needed for his sleepover.
"Alright, well, time to go." Maureen smiled over at him, waiting for him to carry his bags on his back. His twin and Charee were already by the door, ready to get the day over with.
She waved goodbye to the three children as their dad drove away, dropping them off to school and then to his office. She was on pick-up for later.
She didn't have anything else to do for the day, and she only had the youngest twins to take care of. They were still sleeping in their rooms as it was still early.
"Hi, honey. Good morning." she greeted Nikki who woke up first. He was fussing in his crib and rubbing his eyes awake. She was opening the blinds a bit so the light could come in.
"Ma-wee... cold." he mumbled.
Maureen's eyebrows furrowed in confusion. The air conditioner has been off since a few hours ago, and he was wearing a thick dinosaur pajama over his small body.
When she stepped towards him, it was then that she noticed his scarlet cheeks.
"Oh, baby..." she cooed, carrying him in her arms as she felt the warmness of his body.
She should've known that he had a fever since his energy has been low since yesterday night. It wasn't a much obvious change for Nikki, since he was always the calmer twin between him and Natalie, but still.
She should've known.
"Come here." she whispered, although he wouldn't reply because he had his drowsy eyes closed already. She just knew that he was feeling dizzy and exhausted because of the fever.
She walked to the other room, the older twins', because the medical bag was there. Grabbing the thermometer from the bag, she slowly laid Nikki down on Haye's bed before checking his temperature by clicking the button as it touched his forehead.
38.2°C
It wasn't too high, but it wasn't normal temperature either.
With a worried sigh, Maureen carried him again in her arms. He was quiet and wasn't fussing too much, but his deep breaths were worrying her.
Grabbing a fever medicine from the bag, as well as a cooling patch, she first went back down to the kitchen so she can prepare him a light breakfast.
Quickly grabbing her phone from her pocket with one hand, she called Tobias' number and notified him of Nikki's low fever. She assured him that everything was okay and they didn't need to rush to the hospital, promising him that he'll be fine after a few hours. After a few minutes of worried conversation, they finished the call.
Tobias had told her to call him again if ever his temperature rose, telling her that he'd rush home if he needed to to get them to the hospital.
It was a good thing that Natalie was still asleep, else she would also want to be carried as soon as she woke up. She also needed to separate the two for some time, it would be better to avoid the two of them being sick at the same time.
