WHEN I WAS A LITTLE GIRL, I USED TO DREAM ABOUT FLYING IN THE SKY, SWIMMING WITH MERMAIDS, RUNNING WITH MYTHICAL CREATURES, AND WAVING MAGICAL WANDS. As I got older, I learned that things were not as they seemed. There were no such things as people flying in the skies, or mermaids swimming through the seas, and there were no mythical creatures or magic wands. Realism struck me like a lightning bolt (or for a more personal experience, like a football hitting my head).

But I was about to learn that the phrase "not everything is as it seems" could take an entirely different meaning.

The world I grew up in was hiding something from me, or rather, they were hiding what was inside me.

Everyday it was growing, getting stronger. And I never even noticed.

Barely anyone around me knew. But of course, there were some that had decided to keep quiet.

I'd been lied to by everyone.

But the biggest liar was me.
