I have been known as many things over the years. I am a symbol of the street. The sentinel of safety. The crusader to the crosswalk. But the kids all know me as one thing and one thing alone. The crossing guard.
It's a thankless job, but somebody has to put their body on the line day in and day out, challenging the cars to brake in my path. I've had some injuries over the years. A run over foot and a shoulder clipped by a side view mirror. It's no matter, though. Comes with the territory of protecting lives.
