______________
Tobias listened to the mumbles and murmurs he heard outside the shelter he and Naruto resided in. Occasional travelers passed by, the wind would pick up threatening to brake the loose branches from the trees above them. He knew that he needed to be quick returning Naruto. Naruto was after all the Hokage's son. A powerful figure.
Naruto made an occasional hiccup or shiver throughout the night. Obviously used to sleeping indoors and on a bed. It's not that Tobias blamed him for not being used to the outdoors in this way, he was only six. If Naruto were to grow to be a ninja, he would get used to it then. But now was not the time.
Tobias sighed as he heard the first raindrop of the morning. He wished he was wrong earlier, to believe that his sense of smell would have been wrong. But it wasn't, and it never was.
He didn't know if he should just put on his hood and deal with it. But he didn't know how Naruto would handle it. He knew if he asked Naruto, he would act tough about it, not giving a truthful answer.
He put on his hood and adjusted Naruto to be inside the cloak Tobias had been wearing.
He didn't like cloaks they were often just extra weight to slow a person down. But he knew why they existed and he was glad he was forced to wear one for the mission.
A thought shrouded his mind.
"What happened to them?"
As much as he wished they had been captured or killed, he highly doubted all of them did. They were the 'golden workers' of the place. They were by no means weak.
Tobias could only shroud himself in thoughts to ignore the slowly increasing downpour of the rain. The thick drops making their way into Tobias's hair.
Naruto finally stirred awake after an hour of shivering from the cold.
"We are moving already?" He said as he rubbed his eyes with a groggy voice. Naruto's frown deepened when he saw the downpour.
Naruto made his way up onto Tobias's back. Now that he was awake Tobias didn't need to hold him like a baby.
He seemed to go back and forth from sleeping to being awake. He was clearly not used to waking up at this hour. But he couldn't find it in himself to complain.
He started to run after a while. He made sure Naruto held onto him while he did. He didnt need Naruto cracking his head open from falling off. Tobias knew medical Ninjustu but he was no professional at it. He could heal cuts and bruises, not things that would usually need stitches. So his ability's in medical Ninjustu didnt range that far.
After a couple hours Naruto finally groaned.
"Don't you ever get tired?" Tobias concluded he was talking about how he had been running this entire time. Its not like he was full on sprinting. He was running at an even pace.
He shrugged in response.
Tobias couldn't see Naruto's face expression but he could only assume Naruto was frowning from his sigh.
Maybe he will sprint until he was tired. Then he will need a brake. Once more he made sure Naruto was holding onto him.
His legs heated up from the concentration of chakra. And finally as he started to run he splintered the ground. He made a loud thud when he when jumped onto the ground front the trees. The rain was hitting him full on now, but he didn't mind, he couldn't feel the cold.
He heard Naruto gasp and he put a hand on Naruto's back to secure him.
"How are you so fast?" Tobias frowned. "You should teach me!" Naruto said with what Tobias guesser would have been a smile. Naruto was going to give him a heart attack before they reach the Leaf village.
Despite his vocal cords not accurately listening to him, he made a small hmm sound. Naruto laughed.
He could already tell. This kid was the Hokage's son. Of course he had already known. But something about Naruto's trusting demeanor reminded him of the blonde back at the Hokage's tower. But Naruto's rash decisions reminded him of Kushina.
It made him happy that Kushina had gotten what she wanted. A family.
Tobias looked ahead of him quickly and made a turn into he treeline before stopping entirely.
Like he said the streets were busy. It wasn't anything more than what he guessed was trade exports from the village. But he still wanted to avoid human contact. The last time he found himself in front of someone a Kunai made it's way through his cheek and into his mouth.
He may not make any reaction to it, but it still hurts like hell. Something he wouldn't do willingly if that surprises you.
But if he was seeing active exports coming from the village, that must mean he was on the main road to the leaf village. He hoped that when he got there he wouldn't be put behind bars. He would understand why he would be, but he would just prefer if that didn't happen. I'm sure anyone would prefer if they weren't put behind bars.
He didn't get tired as fast as he suspected.
He didn't know how long he was running for but the numbness from the chakra concentration in his legs were probably a sign to sit down.
He made another wood shelter with his wood style and created another fire. It looked to be about mid day not that he could accurately tell with the grey clouds shrouding the sky. He made good progress, he hoped anyway. Naruto sighed.
"If we pass another ramen shop or something can we eat there?" Tobias nodded. "Completely forgot about that."
He is so used to being surrounded by people who don't eat unless they really need too. Only eating when absolutely necessary, that was what he was raised to do.
"Man. It really is going to take a while to understand what is normal and what isn't."
Tobias smiled sadly to the confusion of Naruto.
If the mission was truly to kidnap Naruto, he could only assume they wanted to turn him into a soldier. He would be the next 'Tobias'. Bees next right hand man.
Though, perhaps even if all of his memories were wiped like his, his morals wouldn't disappear, much like Tobias's own morals.
Tobias guessed it was the morals his younger self had. The idea of no one gets left behind. He was told specifically that when someone hinders a mission with an injury, you either kill them or leave them behind. But he could never bring himself to do so.
Despite all the torture he was forced through just to forget the mindset, he never could abandon it.
Some things just tend to shine through despite any kind of trauma.
