Dinah's point of view.

My father threw a vase across the room. "How could you be so stupid, Dinah?"

I flinched at my father's harsh tone. I continued staring at the ground. He had been yelling at me since they dragged me away from the charity event. The car ride home was silent. That might have been the worst part. The silence. The calmness. The uncertainty of what was waiting for me next. As soon as we stepped into his house, he locked me in his office with him. He sat in his rolling chair behind the desk and started yelling at me about how much trouble I had caused. He was right. I did disgrace the family and was nothing but a disappointment. I let my heart cloud my judgment. I ended up ruining everything I'd ever work for. I was probably going to get fired at work. Shit. I groaned. The new chief was a hardass. I was definitely going to get fired. I was going to have to become a security officer or maybe a mall cop.

"Dinah! Dinah! Are you listening to me?" My father yelled.

"Yes, Johnathan. You're just telling me shit that I already know." I rolled my eyes.

"Dinah! Do not talk to your father that way. Show him some respect." My mother chimed in. She hadn't been yelling. She just watched as dad walked around the room, breaking stuff. She would nod occasionally, but that was all.

"Why? Clearly, none if yall give a shit about me. Both of you have been controlling me for my whole life. You were always the bad guy." I pointed to my mom. "Mother, you were always the good guy. There to soothe the pain, but it wasn't out of kindness. No. It was manipulation. Yall forced me into this marriage, and now y'all are confused on why I am the way I am. I never wanted this. I am so happy this plan didn't work. At least you two finally see me now."

"We see you perfectly fine." Johnathan scoffed. "You do better with structure, and we let you have too much freedom. I thought that you were capable of doing one thing right, and you fucked it up. Do you even want to be with Ally?"

"Yes." I folded my arms.

"So how are you going to get her back after that colossal fuck up?" He folded his arms too.

"I don't know." I shrugged.

"You better figure it out soon. I need this marriage to go through. There is so much that you don't understand. You better find a way to get her back. I don't care if she comes back to you out of love, hate, or fear. I don't care if it's by force or by choice. You need to get it done by any means necessary." He looked at me with those cold eyes. "Dinah, get it done. Or I will cut you off, and make your life a living hell."

"Yes sir." I gulped.

"Good now get out. I am tired of looking at you." He flicked his wrist, dismissing me.

I immediately stood up and practically ran out. As soon as I left my parents house, I went home to sleep. I spent most of the weekend in my bed, soaking my pillows with my tears. Lauren came by a few times, but I refused to talk about the auction. We mostly just watched movies or talked about the case. She had been picking up my slack over the past couple of months.

Today was Monday which meant that I had to go to work. Chief Knowles called me earlier to tell me to come straight to her office when I clocked in. I already knew that I was in trouble. I not only embarrassed my family but also the entire police department.

I shuffled in my seat as the chief stared at me. I could tell that she was judging me by just looking at her posture. She was sitting back in her rolling chair with her arms folded across her chest. Her lips were in a thin line. Her eyebrows were furrowed. The silence was loud as fuck. I guessed that she hadn't made up her mind on how she was going to punish me for causing her to lose the best medical examiner in the United States.
