CW - Blood & body horror (sort of)

-🖤-💛-🏳️‍🌈-💛-🖤-

Despite the gaping cavern in his chest, Nightmare managed to scrabble to his feet. His blood seemed from his chest and mouth, the dark purple color of his insides seeping out onto his shirt.

He could hear Dream devouring what he knew was his soul. Nightmare ran, desperately trying to get away. He wasn't exactly sure how he was still alive, but he kept moving, he had no choice.

He didn't know what Dream would do to him if he didn't. He hadn't run this hard in years, centuries, even. The last time he ran like this, well...Dream was chasing him. They were kids then, just running around, having fun.

That felt like a lifetime ago. Things were a lot more serious now.

Nightmare stripped himself of his blazer and wrapped it around his chest the best he could as he ran.

His vision was hazy and he could still feel the blood seeping out of him. He kept sputtering out blood, trying not to swallow it.

He ran through the forest, pushing past everything that got in his way. He didn't know how long he ran, nor how far until his foot got caught on a stray root and sent himself tumbling down a hill. He landed square on his chest in front of a river.

A river and mini waterfall rushed by him, the sounds of birds calling out for one another, a small family of deer drinking water and grazing.

The sheer peacefulness of it all juxtaposed the throbbing pain in his head. He struggled to his knees before grabbing at the hole in his chest, his mind whirling at how he was still alive.

His hand slapped and grabbed at his chest, blood running onto it but...He paused, looking down at himself. It was gone. No scarring, no more blood seeping out of him, it was as if he was never injured. The last time he had that kind of regeneration ability was...

He scrambled over to the water, his reflection wasn't fully clear but the purple pair of eyes staring back at him was enough proof for him to know exactly what had happened.

He staggered back, leaning against a nearby tree. He looked up into the sky, the sun shining down on him. He felt hazy, light-headed, and he wanted to fall fast asleep right there in the moss.

He was jolted awake as the sound of heavy footsteps started getting louder. He shot up from his position and leaped across the river, having a surprisingly safe landing.

He took a glance back, and the sight of a yellow and teal eye was enough to send him running again.

His corruption magic must've merged with Dream's. That was the only explanation for the change in eye color.

He stumbled through the forest, it got thicker and thicker and the sun slowly disappeared into the canopy above him.

The darkness engulfed him and Dream, and he felt at home. He kept running, despite his legs throbbing and begging for a break, there wasn't the time to slow down, even for a second.

He wasn't sure what Dream was going to do with him when he was caught, or where he was going to go. He didn't know how long Dream was going to chase him before he got bored...or even if Dream was going to give up the chase.

He watched the ground carefully, avoiding anything that could possibly slow him down or trip him up. His heart dropped when the small light started growing bigger and the sound of rushing water began to get louder. Why was this cruel world still against him?

He skidded to a stop as he reached the end of the forest. A large and beautiful waterfall stood in his way.

He glanced down to the bottom, the rushing water, and jagged rocks were something he'd rather not get tangled in with. He didn't know where to go now.

As his mind searched for an answer, a pair of large hands shoved his back, sending him cascading down into the river below. He covered his face, the water got louder and louder. He waited for his imminent demise, to be speared by a sharp rock, or to get knocked unconscious under the water, leaving him to drown.

He waited for death to come.

And it never did.

He placed a hand on his waist and a chill ran up and through his entire body.

His tentacle, or what used to be his tentacle, was wrapped tightly around his waist and was hoisting him back up. He struggled, he'd rather take on nature than Dream.

He was brought back up to where Dream was standing, sweat trailing down his body, his hair messy and full of leaves. And his eyes...one a bright gold and the other blackened and teal.

They were staring down at him and it made Nightmare sweat. Dream was a lot taller than he expected, and whether that was because he shrunk was beyond him, his face right where Dream's chest was.

"Are you going to hurt me?" Nightmare asked through his grinding teeth, rage building and bubbling in him. Dream had just taken his magic, his height, his livelihood! That wasn't fair!

"I'm better than you are." Dream replied flatly. Before Nightmare could retaliate, Dream grabbed his face, lifting him to eye level. Nightmare choked, prying at Dream's hand. "So no, I'm not."

Their lips were smashed together in a way all too familiar. Nightmare was usually the one choking Dream though. He was struggling for air, and yet Dream's kiss was tender. As they always were.

Nightmare felt his vision going hazy and black spots began to appear in his vision. Despite this, he still stared into Dream's multicolored eyes. Neither of them ever kissed with their eyes closed, they didn't trust each other enough to do it.

Dream's eyes were deep-set and cold. Nightmare felt no comfort in looking at them and yet he couldn't bear himself to look away.

Dream loosened his grip on Nightmare's neck and he inhaled deeply, coughing. He glanced to his right and saw that a portal had opened up.

He strained to say Dream's name, knowing exactly what Dream was going to do. He didn't want to part, not yet, not without a word spoken between them.

Dream tossed him into the portal with no effort put into it at all. He landed on some soft grass, the sky blindingly white.

A small, monochromatic child, with dark gray skin, a large sweater, and cornrows that went down to the back of their neck helped him to his feet. He knew where he was, and he knew exactly who this was.

"Core-" He sputtered, he rubbed his throat. Dream must've strangled him harder than he thought.

He glanced back to the portal. Dream was just staring at him. Their eyes locked and no one moved. No one barely breathed. Without words, Nightmare knew exactly what Dream was telling him.

I'll be back for you.
