"Lie down."
Adora was instructed before she'd even gotten the chance to stir or set herself up after sleep. She blinked her eyes open, daylight flooding her vision.
"Who're you?"
Her words were groggy, throat still sore from the last night's (was it last night?) escapade.
"Dr. Despondos, but please; call me Mara." The voice was gentle, but still firm. Adora instantly felt she could trust this woman, a feeling she'd rarely encountered.
"I'm Adora."
The kind lady chuckled, and Adora finally mustered enough strength to lift her head and turn towards her. A hand quickly supported the top of her spine, and relief instantly shot through Adora.
"I know."
Adora examined the face behind the trusting voice, and found it to be pleasing. Sunny blue eyes, a different hue to Adora's own, and deep brown hair that complimented her skin. Mara smiled, the expression brightening her already warm face.
"Where am I?"
Her throat was raw, voice cracking with confusion as she tried to swivel her head. She found she couldn't.
"A hospital," Mara answered bluntly. Adora refrained from rolling her eyes. This lady was being lovely to her and here she was, resisting the urge to act like a sassy brat.
"Uhm, which one?" She played with her hands, it was easier than looking at Mara directly.
"The Brightmoon Hospital."
This caused Adora to meet Mara's eyes, her eyebrow raised in amusement.
"Owned by Angella Brightmoon?"
"Micah, actually, but yes. It is owned by the family."
Adora nodded, she should've know they owned a whole ass hospital. She was glad, at least she knew she was being taken care of by people she could trust.
"Why am I here, exactly?" She sort of knew, but she wanted a full rundown of what was wrong with her body.
"Your neck's severely bruised, and cut. That's your primary injury, but you're also suffering from a continuous lack of sleep and multiple minor fractures in your arms and legs. Nothing to worry about, you'll be ready to leave in a week.
A whole fucking week. Thoughts of Adora's mountain of schoolwork flashed through her mind.
"You're friends have kindly dropped off your schoolwork. They instructed me to call you as soon as you were awake. Would you like me to?"
Adora was immensely confounded by the question. Why was she asking her permission to call her friends when they asked her to? She slowly nodded, and Mara mirrored her.
"What about Catra, where's she?"
A distasteful look finally crossed over Mara's features. Adora found it didn't suit her, and something sunk in her stomach.
"Catra requires special care at the moment, we don't know what happened to her. She keeps...glitching, as if she's hardwired to do something she can't."
Adora thought of the flickering neon eyes, and her heart froze.
"A chip? I think Prime might've put a chip in her. Her neck."
She didn't know the logic behind it, but it was the only viable reason behind what Prime was clutching in his fist. A programmed chip he was planning to put in Adora.
"I'll let my colleagues know."
She chuckled slightly, trying to break the tense air with something light.
