Chapter 12- Ringing Ears

Chapter 12

I drop the ball, it disappears then. I walk over to Miss Hanson, she is talking to Mr Rigby. I smile and she smiles back "Lawson! How about you try out for the basketball team?" She barks.

I freeze "Boys?"

"My girls are wimps next to you. As for the boys they need somebody like you to take control of them. Rigby is struggling as for the captain, Josh just mucks around which is not a good impression for Jamie" She explains, she then looks towards Jamie "Bradley! Middle of the court!"

Jamie raises his head and nods. Walking to the centre, "As for you Lawson, this is my little test for you. Make sure Bradley doesn't get the ball" She says thrusting a ball at me.

I catch it immediately, she doesn't say do you want to try out for the team? Or how about we chat after class about basketball? No, its full on how about you try out for the boys basketball team?!

I walk over to Jamie, "This is going to be a piece of cake" He says to me.

"We'll see about that" I say.

He laughs, a crowd start to gather around us, the whistle blows and Jamie lunges for me. I turn around with the ball and dribble it on the floor, he goes for me again trying to snatch it but fails in the process as I circle around him with the ball bouncing on the floor.

"Come on Jamie get her!" A male voice shouts.

"I'm trying!" He shouts.

He goes for the ball, I pick it up and stand still. Throwing it above our heads, he raises his arms and jumps but his jump isn't high enough. I take a couple of steps back before jumping above Jamie's head with my super strength and catching the ball mid-air.

I land perfectly, the ball in my hands. The gym then bursts into clapping, I take a bow like I did when I was White Widow. I turn back to face Jamie, and put my arm out with the ball on it "Take it" I say.

He goes for the ball, my arm moves away. I close my arms and turn away "I'm not looking!" I laugh.

The gym is full of laughter, it's ringing in my ears.

I wait for Jamie to move closer to me, by his footsteps and his breathing. I notice it in a split second and pull it away from him.

I open my eyes and everybody is clapping, I turn to face Jamie. His face is slowly turning red, his hands are rolled up into fists "And to finish off!" I say.

I throw the ball at the net over Jamie's head. It lands straight in, I take another bow and everybody is clapping. "Lawson! How about being Captain?" Miss Hanson shouts.

"Sure" I say coolly, pretending to be cool.

"I will get you back for this Sierra, and for your incident with my brother" He snaps.

"I'm counting on that"

And this time I really am.

It's Lunch, I have drawn a small crowd around me and my friends. After my incident in the gym it didn't take long to spread far. We sit outside in the sunshine, Peter sits opposite me on our table so does James and as for Lennie she talks to the crowd.

The cheerleader who I had encountered on my first day, the dishwater blonde girl, she is in her uniform of blue and white and her hair is tied up as usual. She smiles at me trying to make a convocation "So Sierra, have you ever thought about trying out for the cheer squad? Because you do excellent backflips" She says.

I have yet to know her name "Well-" I begin.

"You would be perfect and a replacement for my friend Hayley, she can't do it anymore because of her dislocated knee. Oh, and you must have forgotten my name. I'm Shannon" The girl smiles and flips her hair "My parents are, like, business people, you know?"

No, no I don't know what she is on about my parents are world renowned scientists not business 'people'.

So I lie "Yeah"

Lennie looks over to me laughing, the bell then rings for 5th period. Everybody groans especially Shannon "Aw, well I have Art now. See you later Sierra Rose!" She says hugging me.

When Shannon has disappeared I walk beside Peter as we both have Biology, we walk together in silence until we reach the classroom. I sit in my seat next to Peter, "What were you going to ask me?" I ask him as Miss Donnelly hands out the text books.

"Nothing" He snaps.

I huff and carry on with my work, we both sit in silence but the class around us is very loud and hurting my ears. I resist myself from covering my ears, but then the class gets louder and Miss Donnelly has just walked out.

The class starts shouting, Jamie shouting at Shannon and other people shouting at other people. Lennie looks over to me and mouths 'Are you okay?'

I nod at her, and shift my eyes back over to Peter. My ears are now seriously hurting, I grab my bag and run out of the room. I run past Miss Donnelly who stops me "Sierra what are you doing out of class?" She asks.

"I'm sorry miss, I need to go see the school nurse. My ears are really hurting" I explain.

She nods "Well it's on the first floor at the very end. Miss Aiden will be there hopefully"

I thank her and run past, my ears still ringing. I run quickly down the stairs and find the nurse quickly, she's sitting with another student filling out a form. She motions to me and I explain my ears, as they are sensitive and I had a hard time hearing. She nods and tells me to sit down.

I do as she tells me, she gives me a form and asks me to fill out the questions, I do so. When I write my name she looks over and let's out a huff "Rich kid" She mutters.

I hear her well enough even though my ears hurt, I want to say something but then she will send me back to class. I fill out the form and hand it back to her, "You sit here until your ears are better love, there is only one hour left. And I don't think it's right to send you back with your ears like that" She tells me.

"Yeah" I say, she nods.

Time passes, the bell rings for last period. I cover my ears and everybody walks past me, having their own convocations that I can still hear. Lennie gives me a weak smile as she walks past with James, so does Peter.

"Il wait for you after class" Peter tells me.

"Thank you"
