AMANDA'S POV
I look at mom and she's on the floor sobbing like a small child, Chioma has left her mother's side and is trying to console grandma
"Mom please what is she talking about?" I ask her but she doesn't reply me
"Chidinma your precious daughter is talking to you!" Aunty Ifeoma sarcastically says
I take a bold step my vision already blurry with raging anger, I swear if this woman doesn't shut up, I'll shut her up myself
"I wasn't talking you! Shut the fuck up!" I yell at her
"I've had enough of you and your bitchy attitude towards your own family! What is it that actually happened between you and my mom huh?! Why can't you just tell me exactly what happened? Why're you guys still lying to me!" I finish
Aunty Ifeoma takes a step back away from me, surprise very evident in her face
"You're a spoilt child! America has destroyed your manners completely! You think you're still abroad? You're in Nigeria! Don't you ever use that language with me again!"
I take a step back away from her not because of fear or anything but surprise. Surprise at the fact that Aunty Ifeoma is like this, why she's like this and how she became like this towards her own family. What sin could my mother have committed for her own blood to hate everything about her including her own child
"Please tell me what happened" I silently beg Aunty Ifeoma
Aunty Ifeoma stays silent for a while before speaking again
"Your selfish mother allowed my father to die when she could have helped him live, she put her own feelings first instead of her dying father" she says slowly tears streaming down her face
"Don't say that Ifeoma, it's wasn't her fault"
I look at the two of them confused, mom is already on her feet walking towards me
"It wasn't her fault?! Papa could have lived if she had did what she was supposed to do!" Aunty Ifeoma is raising her voice again
"I'm so sorry Amanda I really didn't want to lie to you" Mom is saying to me but I'm to stunned to reply her
"Please let's go outside let me explain" she's pulling my hand so I can go with her but I don't move
"Mom Grandpa didn't cheat right?" I ask her almost whispering
She shakes her head at me
I quickly remove my hand from her and step away from her
"Why did you lie to me?" I ask her
"She'll give you another selfish reason now! Always thinking about herself!" Aunty Ifeoma yells
Chioma takes her mother hands and pulls her with her to the room, Aunty Ifeoma does not resist but follows her inside silently sobbing, grandma follows them too leaving just mom and I in the sitting room
"Mom I asked you a question" I remind her again
"I'm sorry Amanda, I'm so sorry"
"You're sorry? How could you do that to Grandpa? How could you? You tarnished his image before me! I almost entirely lost respect for him!"
"I didn't want that to happen but I panicked that's why!"
"Mom please tell me what happened!"
"Amanda please don't hate me for this?" My mom pleads
I only look at her waiting for her to continue
"Your grandfather never cheated on grandma" she says
I only keep quiet, I figured that out already
"He was really sick and Ifeoma wanted me to come back here but-"
"But what Mom?" I ask her already getting irritated
"I didn't want to, my job and I couldn't leave you"
"You couldn't leave me? Mom your dad needed you! He needed you and you couldn't tell me?! You just lied to me? Why mom? How could you?"
I ask her wiping the tears that are already steaming down my face
"You wouldn't understand 𝒏𝒘𝒂𝒎, I did it for you!"
"Will you stop saying that mom! Same way moving back to this place was for me right?" I ask her and she keeps quiet
"You let your own father down"
"Don't speak to me like that Amanda, I know you're upset but I'm still your mother"
I let out a small laugh and turn my back against her walking towards the door
"Where are you going to?" She asks me
"Away from here obviously, I need to get away from here"
"Amanda I thought we were talking" she says from behind me
I open the door and walk out, I can't believe she did that. And she has the nerve to say she did it for me! How was it for me? Now I fully understand Aunty Ifeoma, I still don't know the full story but what I've heard is enough for me to want to stay away from my mom for now too. I need a break from that house and everyone in it.
