They woke him out of his drift to sleep, but now that he was awake he wasn't too sure if he was dreaming when he heard them or not.The soft knocks came again, startling him away from his peaceful pillow as he threw his sheets off to the side. It is 12:36 at night, are we serious right now?
It can't be Satoru, he just left a moment ago and he has a room key. In Suguru's mind it lacked common sense for him to get up and open the door for someone who had a key. Especially when they can open the damn door themselves.
The knocks persisted, louder and more hollow this time. Suguru sighed as he got up, his hand rubbing away at the fatigue on his face. In his other hand a small cursed spirit was quietly summoned to keep at his feet. It was telepathically instructed to clear a path for Suguru's steps to follow, ensuring a quiet, creak-free route.
Additional knocks rang through with force, shaking the door in its frame. The floor shook beneath his bare feet with the banging. Suguru's skin began to flare with goosebumps as he nervously stood in front of the door now.
He softly turned the lock to the left, and trailed down to the door knob. His breathing halted as he slowly pulled the door knob downwards, and pulled towards him, opening the door the smallest he could. One deep purple eye peeked through the small crack in the doors opening. To his dismay no sign of a person knocking was to be seen in the hallway.
"You've got to be fuc-" Suguru sighed as he began to shut the door. A sudden slap from the lower half of the door sounded. The opening was small, until the door was forced backwards towards Suguru.
"Suguru..." He looked down at the force stopping the door to see Rintaro crawled into a ball on the floor with her blanket enclosing her. "Where's Toru?"
"Rintaro? Why aren't you sleeping?" Suguru kneeled down to level with the shaken girl. He narrowed his eyes at the tears that stained her face and the red in her cheeks. "What happened?" His hand reached to her face and began to wipe her tears.
She continued to sob under his touch, feeling more alone and terrified than she's ever felt before. "I need Toru, please." Suguru's heart felt like it was on the verge of breaking into several pieces. He couldn't just idly sit by and watch her cry like this. She was clearly shaken up with no possibility of handling at the moment.
Suguru stretched his legs out to sit flat on his butt next to Rintaro. The door behind him shut and locked, giving him something to lean on. His hand pressed firmly against her back, hinting her to sit up and lay with him. She obeyed his gesture and sat up, her head now laying on Suguru's shoulder with her legs rested on his.
"He's not here, Rintaro... What's going on, though?" Suguru slid his arm over her shoulder and lightly rubbed her upper arm. The poor girl began to sob harder and he couldn't seem to figure out why. "I need him Suguru, where is he! I need to make sure he's not dead."
"I can promise you he's not dead. He stepped out a couple minutes ago to deal with Nanami and Haibara's plane tickets. So I'm pretty sure he'll be gone for a little bit more." Rintaro looked up to him with her red, puffy eyes and sniffled.
He couldn't possibly have her wait for him, especially if she was in this much distress. "Suguru, you don't understand I need to see him. I can't sleep without him tonight."
"Rintaro, I understand, okay? I'm just not sure where he is, so I'm sorry. But, I can come sit with you until you fall asleep. Or you can come sleep in here with us." Suguru's hand slid up the door and searched for the handle.
