"mom, you're home early!" novella hollered while cristina set her purse down to the floor. she ran over to her mother and gave her a hug, cristina hugging back.

"where's daddy?" she asked while she began to pet her mom's stomach and kissing the baby growing there. cristina only sighed, but then couldn't help to form a smile afterwards. she really couldn't wait for her little sister or brother to get there.

"he's still at work. covering a big trauma case." she recalled trying to help, but owen only shooed her away after trying to help several times. she finally gave in and went home.

"cristina." her mother stood up from the couch to which cristina rolled her eyes at the sight of her.

"hello, mother." she murmured, with novella still hugging her tightly.

"you didn't tell me that you were pregnant." she raised an eyebrow, while cristina's eyes widened.

"who told you.." she stopped herself, looking down to see novella watching her suspiciously. cristina sighed again, walking over to the fridge causing her daughter to let go of the hug.

"i'm sorry!" she pleaded, chasing after her. "i didn't know that you didn't want anyone to know!"

she took a bottle of water from the fridge. "no, nov, it's not your fault. i should've told you i didn't want anyone knowing." she gave a cold stare toward helen.

"my granddaughter and i get along nicely. what can i say?" she shrugged, then allowing herself to sit back down on the couch. novella ran back over to her toys, showing them to her grandma who acted interested and entertained.

cristina rolled her eyes again, almost chugging  the water in the bottle until it was all finished. after, she threw the empty plastic container in the recycling bin and clapped her hands together.

"okay, babe let's go. we're going to the pool." novella stopped talking to her grandma about all her toys and her head quickly turned to cristina.

"is grandma coming?" she smiled, standing up and dropping the toy that was in her hand. cristina walked closer to her.

"nope. your old granny stays here." helen gasped at her daughter's words, while cristina grabbed novella's hand and walked her over to the staircase to help her put on her shoes.

"i want her to come with us, though!" she pleaded, looking back at her grandmother. cristina did the same, watching as helen stared back at them intensely.

she sighed. "next time. but not today, because today is one of the only days that i come home early from work. tomorrow it's not gonna be like that." cristina sat novella on the stairs and put on her pink sneakers. both of them hated pink, but it was hard to find a pair of girls' shoes that was any other color.

"why can't we just go in our own pool?" novella questioned, looking at her mother.

"because it's more fun when it's not." even though cristina hated the idea of swimming in a pool with a bunch of other people, she knew how much her daughter loved it and it would be a great way to spend time with her.

"okay, now wait here. i'm going to get our bathing suits and our other things, and then we'll get going." cristina said, starting to walk up the stairs. novella yelled an 'okay' to her.
