she comes rushing out of the o.r the minute she was finished. she didn't know a single thing about it, and it had been hours. her phone was on silent for hours, and she was in surgery for hours. her little girl was knocked out unconscious for hours, and she didn't know anything.
it was eight fifteen at night, and she finished surgery just a few minutes prior. frantically running, she yanks her surgical mask and scrub cap off her body and dials her husband as fast as she could. she saw the texts from him the minute she got out of the o.r.. novella was sick, and she was in the hospital right now.
"owen, where are you?" it was evident she was shaking. her heart was pounding and her face felt cold. she took a deep breath in attempt to calm herself down, but how could she? something was seriously wrong.
they were in the hospital, and owen gave her their room number and she quickly hung up, speed walking over to the room. a little part of her didn't want to run so fast. a little part of her wanted everything about the current situation to remain a secret...because if it was really that bad, cristina herself didn't know how she would make it out alive.
but quickly she went anyway, ignoring whatever fear there was in her mind. she had to ignore the heart that burst with every step that she took. she had to ignore the sudden thoughts emerging into her brain. she had to ignore the pounding inside of her head. she had to be stronger than that.
finally, she got there. pushing the door open with whatever strength she had left, a breath escaped from her mouth, as if the sight of her daughter looking so small and frail relieved her. but all the more frightened she was the moment her eyes laid on her little girl. she looked so small. so helpless. and the moment she did, she knew something was wrong.
"oh my God..." her voice was trembling, and her knees were on the verge of collapsing. just one glance at her, and the whole world would've known that this was not a healthy girl. there were newly formed bags under her eyes that were a deep purple, and her skin was as white as snow. she looked even skinnier, if it was even possible, but she did. and nobody could see those bright blue eyes as they were hidden underneath her eyelids like she was asleep. yet she was very much awake.
"cris, it's serious." owen whispered. he sounded even more distraught than he did on the phone. the layer of skin underneath his eyes were red, like he had been crying, and given the glassy appearance to his eyes, he was. she couldn't understand how anything about it could be so serious. wasn't it just a few hours ago when her daughter showed her the grape flavored lollipop that was inside her mouth? wasn't she fine?
she breathed. "i-i know. i can see that." cristina walked into the room that only held the three of them. novella was awake, but she was tired and she was confused. life was so so unfair to her. it really was.
it wasn't until she saw a tear fall against her hand did cristina realize she was crying. she bit the bottom of her lip with the top front of her teeth to avoid making more than a noise. and when that wasn't enough, she took the same hand where her previous tear fell, and placed it against her mouth, muffling any sound that would soon come out of her.
she felt a hand against her arm. one that was manly yet gentle. she searched for the arm attached to it, feeling for its muscle then holding onto it tightly. the hand that was on her mouth was frozen there, and would be for a long while, while her eyes locked on her daughter, like she had fallen into a trance and couldn't escape.
the arm connected to a mouth, and the mouth spoke words with a voice she was very familiar with. the only voice she really felt comfortable around, until she heard the next words that had the ability to make all the strength in her bones vanish away as if there was no strength at all.
