it was a saturday, so cristina had the weekend off. owen had work, but he decided to take a day to spend with his family. he had been skipping work a lot, and cristina has, too. it was good he was the chief of surgery. she was safe unless he wasn't.
cristina was concerned about it. she was concerned about everything, but she trusted that that worst was behind them and that nothing as horrible as what was done with was going to come their way.
"i'm sad that he is gone..." novella said one morning during breakfast time. owen and cristina told her about the gender of the baby the following day they found out, and she was very confused on how to feel.
"i know. we all are." owen sighed, whipping up something for novella and cristina. "but on the bright side, it looks like the chemo is working."
cristina smiled. "yeah, your results were excellent. A+ material right there." they were all proud of her for responding to the treatment very well, but they knew too much to think it was going to stay that way forever. it seemed as if they were holding a time bomb waiting for it explode and for something destructive to happen.
"so does it mean i will get my hair back?" she exclaimed, with her legs swaying underneath the table. her hair grew fairly quickly, so there was already a visible layer of thin hair on her head. her next round would be tomorrow, and then her hair would be gone all over again.
"no, not yet. soon, though." cristina responded, and novella grinned. truthfully, she hadn't gone out since the incident at the pool. it broke their heart knowing how it hurt her so much, but they wouldn't force her to do anything she didn't want to do.
owen set their plates down next to them and poured a glass of milk and two cups of coffee. they had healthy breakfasts everyday on behalf of novella's condition. they took her health very seriously, making sure she got enough fruit, vegetables, and everything else to make her stronger. for now, it seemed to be working.
"smells good, owen." cristina took her fork and began to eat her scrambled eggs, something owen made a lot. novella also got some scrambled eggs, along with a cup of fruits she was told to finish entirely. owen sat down beside them and began to eat as well.
"alright. what does everyone want to do today?" owen asked, taking a sip of his coffee. he watched as novella played with her food, frowning. he looked over at cristina who gave him a shrug in response.
"is your food okay, nov?" cristina took a bite of her food, and novella sighed.
"no it's yummy." she took a spoonful of her eggs and chewed it slowly. "i'm sad about the baby." novella refused to make eye contact with her parents and then began to cry, her hands trying to wipe the tears from her eyes. she was really excited about becoming a big sister, and was so fixed on the idea of being one. both of them knew how hard it had to be for her.
"oh, sweetheart." owen spoke, taking her hand away from her face and held onto it. "i know that it's still sad for you, but you'll adjust to it. you really wanted to be a big sister, huh?" cristina curved her eyebrows inward and bit her lip absently, just staring at the scene.
she just nodded her head.
"and besides," cristina chimed in, trying her best to get her smile to hold. "you wouldn't be able to play with the baby for a long time, anyway. he would cry all the time and his diapers would have needed a lot of changing. and he would've thrown up on you a lot." novella perked her head up and looked at her mother. for a little bit new tears stopped running down her face.
