Caera was a 17 year old girl like any other, except that she had lived her entire life in an orphanage. She never knew who her parents were or where they came from.  Nessa and Aodhan, the owners of the orphanage,  had told her that they found her on their doorstep wrapped in a blanket, with a letter in her little hands. She was only a few months old then but it seemed like she understood every word they said.  Caera had read the letter over and over again and again. She knew every word by heart, but she could not understand it. It said the usual: ‘we’re sorry we can’t take care of our little girl, please take good care of her in our place.’ and then: ‘When time is right she’ll return to us again.’ At first Caera thought it meant that they’d come and take her back. Then she wasn’t so sure she even wanted to go back. They didn’t have a lot of money and the latest trends and fashion, but she had a bed to sleep in and a roof over her head,  a loving family, she could go to school and there was always food on the table. She had all she needed and wanted right here. When she turned 17 and still no one had come for her, she decided to let it go and make the best of her life.

The day before she would turn 18 everything went like normal. Nessa and Aodhan were sneaking around preparing her surprise party, though they were so obvious you could hardly call it a surprise.  All the other kids there were also conspiring something. Caera shrugged and went to school. After yelling ‘I’m off to school!’  she slammed the front door and sprinted to the point where she was going to meet her best friend. Kyiana saw her coming from afar and started jumping and waving. Caera laughed and speeded up a little. Kyiana Flanagan had become 18 a couple of months ago. She had beautiful, long, wavy, blonde hair which fell perfectly around her round face. Completely opposite of Caera’s  brown, straight hair. Her diagonally cut bangs covering one of her eyes. She didn’t mind not being able to see with that eye. When she needed it she would just tie her hair back, but she loved the hairstyle she had so much that she couldn’t be bothered by it.

She stopped right in front of Kyiana and gave her a big hug. They looked each other in the eye and started laughing. It was their daily routine but it always made them laugh. Caera had emerald green eyes. Kyiana had complete heterochromia iridum, one eye was bright blue while the other was green. Most people avoided her because of it and if Caera was completely honest she would have to admit that it took her some time getting used to too. But once you’d get to know Kyiana, you would know that she’s a crazy, fun loving, enthusiastic and caring girl. Therefore she was Caera’s best friend. She adored her and same could be said for Kyiana. They had been best friends since kindergarten. Caera had stood up for Kyiana when she was being bullied about her looks. She never was very slim, but she hadn’t been fat either, she was just average. The only thing not average about her was her eyes, but Caera thought that it made her just so much cooler.

They chatted until they reached the school grounds and they heard the bell ring. As fast as they could they ran to their class. They made it to their seats just in time. The door opened and the most hated teacher at school entered class.  Mister Marvolo was tall, bald and spit flew everywhere when he talked. All the students called him The Snake, because of his looks and he lisped when he talked. ‘If everyone can be quiet,’ he spat. ‘then I will announce today’s program.’ Caera felt sorry for the ones sitting at front and felt glad that she and Kyiana were seated in the back. She looked next to her and Kyiana winked at her, showing that she had been thinking the same.

Next class was math. She hated it, and so did Kyiana. When they had homework for it they always needed help from Daniel , Kyiana’s boyfriend. He wasn’t really an expert in math but at least he was way better than they were. Daniel Seven  had been together with Kyiana for over a year now and they seemed to be made for each other. Caera was jealous at how perfect they looked together, but if she had to name one person who’d deserve all the happiness in the world she would say Kyiana.
