Marty
The college had its annual apple festival with rides and food. We went to destress and decompress from everything that happened. Plus, Bailey and I love the rides and gorging ourselves on junk.
I bought two wristbands and handed one to Bailey. We fastened them around our wrists. Unlimited rides here we come.
While the others figured out what they were doing, we hit the rides. Bailey and I threw our hands in the air like we didn't care. Next were the spinning rides. We got off those and staggered from everything spinning—finally, the funhouse.
Afterward, we grabbed some grubbed and parked our asses at a picnic table.
"It's nice to let loose," Bailey said between bites.
I chewed, swallowed, and sipped my drink. "I agree because the past few weeks have sucked ass."
"No shit."
"I thought life got easier when you got older."
"No, that's when you're a kid because you don't have life responsibilities."
"Adulting sucks."
Bailey giggled.
Rafe and Reese walked over and plopped down at the table with their food and drinks.
"Do you mind?" I asked.
"Nope." Rafe took a bite of his burger.
"Where are the other yahoos?"
"They're deciding which rides to ride. It's not that complicated, but they make it that way. Which rides did you hit?"
"Most of them."
"Coasters?"
"Pft, of course. It's a requirement to hit the coasters."
"We even sat in the front seat," Bailey said.
"Fearless?" Rafe asked.
"Always. Excuse me. I need to use the ladies' room." Bailey got up from her seat.
"I'll go with you," Reese said.
Reese and Bailey headed to the bathrooms.
"How's Bailey doing?" Rafe asked.
"She cries at night. She doesn't want anyone to worry."
"I can't even imagine."
"Me neither."
"Look, I know Bailey and I haven't gotten along, but I would never wish this on anyone."
"Maybe you should talk to her."
Rafe glanced at me and nodded.
*******
BaileyAfter peeing, I washed my hands as Reese waited for me. We came out of the bathroom to find Rafe standing there.
"I'm going to head to the picnic table." Reese walked away, leaving me with Rafe.
"I wanted to talk to you," Rafe said.
"I got that by Reese scampering off."
We started walking to the table.
"I know we had our differences, but I am sorry about your dad."
"I get why you flipped out about Reese, but she's my best friend. Her, Rowan, and Sage made life bearable."
"Yeah. I get it."
I stopped and faced Rafe. "I sat with Marty every night last year. We didn't discuss what happened to him. We just sat there. When he wanted to build a fort, I helped him. If he wanted to play a game, we played one. He didn't need words from someone. He just needed someone to care about him."
