Valentine
I woke up before everyone and brewed some coffee. With the chaos happening, I wanted a moment of peace. It didn't last when my phone rang with a video call.
I pressed the accept button. "Hey, Ma."
"Happy birthday, baby."
I chuckled. "Thanks. What are you doing up so early?"
"I had to finish an article and send it to Payton before we hit the road."
"Let me guess. Dad's still sleeping?"
"Yes. Your father is being a lazy bum."
I chuckled.
"You're up early."
"I wanted a few minutes of peace before the chaos ensued."
Ma giggled. "I hear ya. Sometimes, it's nice to have some quietness."
"You have no idea." I poured coffee into a mug, placed the pot back, and grabbed some creamer. "What time are you and Dad coming?"
"We must stop by the bakery to grab your cake before heading to the campus."
"Is it chocolate cake?"
"Well, duh."
I chuckled. "Are you bringing tarts?"
"Of course. You make the holidays difficult since you're not a fan of sweets. Do you remember what happened on Halloween?"
I propped up my phone, leaned on the counter, and sipped my coffee. "Yeah. The dipshits fought over who got my candy and got pissed when I gave it to Dad."
Ma laughed. "Your dad loved when you went trick or treating. He said it was free candy without the work."
I shook my head and rolled my eyes. I heard a groan, and Ma swiveled the camera to Dad. Dad's hair was sticking up as he grabbed a cup of coffee.
"Hey, Dad." I waved to my dad.
"Happy birthday, Valentine." My dad sipped his coffee and rubbed his eyes.
"Ma said you were being a lazy bum."
Dad arched his brow and looked past the camera. "What the hell, Tori?"
"What?"
"I don't get many days off. I'm entitled to act like a lazy bum."
I snickered as my parents argued. Thumping came from the stairs as I glanced at the kitchen doorway. Pat entered, grabbed a cup, and poured some coffee.
"Patrick?" Dad asked.
Pat replaced the coffee pot, grabbed creamer, and fixed his coffee.
"Patrick!" Ma yelled.
I drank my coffee and waited.
Pat turned around as he drank his coffee and stopped. He stared at the phone screen. I pointed to my ears. Pat shrugged and shook his head.
I turned to the phone screen. "I don't think Pat's hearing aids are working."
My parents started signing to Pat. He nodded and signed back to them.
I went upstairs to grab another pair of hearing aids for Pat. When I came out of his bedroom, Romeo walked out of his bedroom and yawned. "Ma and Dad are on a video call with Pat."
"Okay, let me use the bathroom." Romeo walked to the bathroom.
I jogged down the steps, walked into the kitchen, and gave Pat his hearing aids. He swapped out the dead ones for the fully charged ones.
