Samayra POV
We sat on the dining table eating peacefully, as I devoured the kheer mom made and completely and successfully avoided my husband and his face that had swollen up like a puffer fish since we had the little argument three days ago. We had been alternately spending time at the hospital, and barely got to be with each other.
So, now he wanted me to apologize for getting pastries from my ex-boyfriend. How does that make sense?
I didn't even ask him to get it for me. He got it after he heard, I was pregnant and I ate it because I was starving and I had a child growing inside me.
"Ahmm... Grandma will be back tomorrow. Ambar, you should go pick her up from the airport." My father-in-law says as I had this sudden urge to facepalm myself.
Don't get me wrong, I respect that woman for raising and educating her children so nicely but sometimes she's just a pain in... You know what...
"Ayra, which reminds me. There are some rules for pregnant woman in the household which you and Ishleen will have to abide by when she's here." My mother-in-law says and I had this uncontrollable urge to roll my eyes.
"Here it comes." I whisper to myself and Ambar clears his throat and my father-in-law tries to cover his grin and small sound of a laugh with a cough.
"Tej, Stop it. And Ayra, these are for your own good." My mother-in-law scolds us and I nod.
"Okay, mom what are these rules?" I ask trying not to sound sarcastic.
"You and Ambar will be sleeping in different rooms until you are over 15 weeks pregnant." She says as it was Ambar's turn to react this time.
"Mom, what the..." he goes to say as I clear my throat.
"I am thinking of shifting you and Ishleen in one room and Ambar can share bed with his brother."
"For old times' sake..." my father-in-law says sarcastically as I furrow my brows.
"Till when did they share a room?" I ask curiously.
"Ambar was 17, I guess and Chetan was 15 when we moved out of that 2BHK and into this house." My father-in-law says.
"How bad was it?" I ask and my mother-in-law laughs.
"I was ready to send both of them to boarding school, if not for your grandmother." My mother-in-law replies.
"I once thought there was a trail of thick dried blood that led me to 8 year old Chetan sleeping in a corner of the bathroom." She says as my eyes open wide.
"That was jam." My father-in-law says as we burst out laughing.
"There was never bloodshed." Ambar says as If proud of his selfcontrol, as my mother-in-law rolls her eyes.
"Oh, I can't wait for these two to have kids." She says as my father-in-law nods.
"I hope they are as much of a pain for them as these two were for us." He says as there was a tiny hint of a smile on Ambar's face.
"There was bloodshed three days ago." We hear and turn to see Chetan entering with a bandage around his head and supported by Ishleen's shoulder.
"A little bad timing, but you wouldn't have heard me speak from the entrance and my head hurts if I shout. So, you said there was never bloodshed, but we had a fight and it resulted into my brain being exposed to the fresh air, so I guess you can't say that." Chetan says as Ambar gets up from his chair.
"You were supposed to be discharged tomorrow, why are you..." Ambar goes to say as Ishleen speaks.
"He was getting restless to come home and the doctor saw no reason to keep him overnight so..." she says as me and mom stand up helping Chetan sit on the couch behind the dining table.
"Nice, you two should get some alone time before Ambar and Chetan have to be roommates again." I say and Chetan exclaims.
"WHAT!!!" and holds his head unable to bear the sound of his own loud voice.
"Oh, uptil we reach 15 weeks right? That's a tradition in our village." Ishleen says and my mother-in-law nods.
"Yeah, and we can't let Chetan sleep alone until he is fully recovered." She adds as Chetan frowns.
"Aww... someone's glad to have his old roommate back." I say as Ambar laughs.
"Don't worry buddy, I'm not going to cuddle you." He says and winks as Chetan just sighs.
"When is grandma leaving?" he asks as we all look at my father-in-law.
"After she sees the two new faces of the next generation." He says as all our faces turn to frowns in one single instant.
"Kill me already." Chetan sighs as mom looks at him with anger and fury.
"Don't say that again. You just got discharged. Nobody in this house is allowed to talk about death or sickness. We are welcoming two new lives soon, let the good vibes radiate." Mom scolds us all.
"How will Grandma tolerate that?" Ambar whispers as mom raises her left eyebrow as a threat.
In one year of being married to him, I knew this was her warning. One more word from my husband and mom would twist his ear like a doorknob.
"Umm... I'll help Chetan to his room." Ambar says excusing himself and I smile looking at Ishleen.
"Is he still on liquid diet?" I ask and she shakes her head.
"The doctor says that quicker the recovery after brain surgery, and the faster we restore normality in his life, the better it is." She says as I pick up a tray.
"Since we are done with dinner, I'll put yours on the tray with Chetan's. Take it and feed him... Oh and kick my husband out if he turns overprotective about his lil bro." I say as she nods and chuckles.
"Got it." She says helping me gather the food and set the tray.
"Ahmm..." dad clears his throat as we look at him. He gestures with his eyes towards mom and we turn to look at her standing in a corner and just looking at us.
"Mom?" I say as she zones out of whatever she was thinking and looks me in the eye, wiping her tears with the edge of her dupatta.
"Oh... just... Nazar na lagge is ghar ko, aur mere bachon ko... May you always be happy like this." She says as Ishleen 'Awwwws' at her dialogue as I whisper.
(May evil eye stay away from this house amd my kids.)"Grandma and happiness in the same house... Yeah, I believe you." I say sarcastically and in a low voice and she shakes her head.
"Ayra, You are not my daughter-in-law but my daughter, so don't you think I will hesitate before pulling your ear too." She says angrily.
"Sorry, mom." I say as dad adds.
"For speaking the truth." He says as mom gives him a stare.
"Ahmm.. sorry." He says as we all laugh before retiring to our own rooms, and waiting for what drama Grandma will bring this time.
"Turn off the lights." My husband says in his angry, inconsiderate voice turning away from me and I do it, sitting back on the bed and almost stubbing my toe on the bed side table.
"Ouch""What's wrong?" He says getting up in a split second and turning the light on. "Are you okay? Is the baby okay?"
"You weren't talking to me? I thought you didn't care..." I say as he shakes his head.
"Tell me first, are you okay?"
"Yeah, i just stubbed my toe on that table." I say as he gets down to look at it.
"I'll get one that has less sharper edges and better covering. You can come with me. We have to baby proof the house and this will be a start." He says as I shake my head holding his face in my hands.
"I love you." I say leaving the dimlight on, so I could treasure another night naked and in his arms.
