18: The Fullfilment
JACK'S POV
We had all rallied at the main factory. There was a large set of steps leading into the factory, and the Bokkenrijders were lined up on them, armed with bows, swords, axes, and maces. The ones on the flanks were mounted on their huge goats, ready to ride us down. There were only about 1,500 of them: a measly number compared to the army of over 30,000 slaves we had gathered. The slaves were lined up at the foot of the stairs, and the team was at their head. Alice and Kcaj stood hand-in-hand, Piper was at my left, Kevin was to my right, and max was backing us up. The huge Boroma, Tukandu was behind us, and by his side were Itris and Yddrgi, the djinn and the river troll.
"Alright. We'll push forwards. Tukandu, you and the army hold them here at the gates. When you beat them, stay here. The team and I will go in and deal with the captains. No matter what, don't interfere," I said to the huge Boroma.
"Understood. Warriors, forward!" yelled Tukandu.
The slaves streamed forward after the huge dog-man, and the Bokkenrijders fired a line of arrows into them. Not many fell, and the front lines of each army clashed with a thunderous din of screams, clangs, and general battle noises. I dashed forwards into the fray, and I was followed by the team.
I cleaved down a Bokkenrijder armed with a scimitar, and we rushed up the steps. Several of the enemy's soldiers tried to come at us, but the rebel slaves would always step into their paths and take them on before they could get to us. Finally, we made it into the main factory.
We were in a large lobby-like area, and a tall set of metal stairs stretched up and away to the second floor. Several other doors branched off to other places, but those wouldn't be where the enemy commanders would be. I started up the stairs, and the team followed me. Piper did a quick back sweep of the lobby with her bow before following us up. As we neared the end of the staircase, I turned around.
"Alright, before we go in, I just want to say that we might...lose a person or two. I just want you to know that this is very possible. I...I've been with all of you for over a year, except for Kcaj, but he's still my clone and he's a great guy in addition to being a good fighter. Max, you've been the new guy on the block, but I've grown to love you like a brother. kevin, you've been my loyal friend, and I feel the same way about you. Alice...you're a great girl, and I hope that you and Kcaj wind up being happy together. Piper...I don't know what to say. I love you," I said.
Tears welled up in piper's eyes, and she rushed forward, hugging me. I hugged her back just as tightly, and I found myself nearly crying as well. We both stepped back and wiped our eyes before sharing a final kiss.
"Alright. Let's move," I said.
We went up the stairs and emerged into a large rectangular room. The room was blank and it had a high ceiling. At the far end of it stood three figures. The leftmost one was Herne, garbed in his dark cloak and armor and surrounded by his host of spectral dogs. His massive antlers made him look like a demon, and his yellow eyes glowed as he gripped the hilt of his huge broadsword.
To the right of Herne was Azi Dahaka. He was a huge man claed in green robes. I couldn't see his face due to the triangular mask he wore over it. The mask had eyeholes, and through them I could see dark eyes with slitted pupils...like a snake. He raised one of his hands, and eight hissing serpents burst from his back. He hunched over into a fighting pose, and the snakes that sprouted from his shoulders and back hissed, twisting around.
The final figure in the center was Watcher. He was simply garbed in his classic Greek hoplite armor that we had seen him in so many times before: a bronze chestplate, a plumed helmet, and a simple red tunic over golden greaves. He carried a round bronze shield and a spear. He raised the spear, and the air around him whistled and howled.
