8: Funding an Army
JACK'S POV
As I flopped down on the bed beside Piper, a couple of thoughts ran through my head. The most important was about...money. Mr. kiase had said that if the chateau got harmed then the Syndicate would be fined. The chateau didn't get torn up though...but the lawn in front of it did. Would that still come out of our money?
"Jack, what are you thinking about?" Piper asked.
"Nothing, nothing. Sorry," I said, sitting up.
The TV in the room was on, and it was on CNN. I heard the reporter's voice say something about the Middle East, and I shrugged it off. Enough was going on there now. Bombings, war, revolts...scary and sad stuff like that. But when the lady said something about a moving mountain, I actually started paying attention. I turned to the TV.
"Piper, listen to this!" I called to her. We both turned to the TV.
"Reports are coming in from Saudi Arabia that what appears to be a moving island or mountain was sighted off of the coast this morning, at about 5 or 6. The mountain appeared to be rising up, but then it turned and drifted off out to sea. We are not sure what this may have been, but authorities suspect that a cruise ship may have drifted too close to shore," said the reporter.
"That's no cruise ship...Piper, what could you think of that it might be?" I asked her.
"It's probably a Zaratan. The Zaratan are a species of massive turtle-like creatures that disguise themselves as islands, but when ships attempt to land on them, they move away. The Zaratan is a creature from middle Eastern folklore too, and apparently Sinbad the Sailor ran into one on his travels. But...they described it as a mountain. Since Zaratan look like turtles, they're..." she started.
"They're flat! This has to be something else. What if it's something that Herne summoned?" I asked.
"Then..it couldn't be...Asag?!" Piper cried, her face going white.
"What the heck is an Asag?!" I asked her.
"Asag is a creature from Sumerian mythology. He's a rock demon, one of the biggest ever to walk the face of the earth. He cause earthquakes when he walks, and he controls an army of smaller stone giants and demons. If Herne''s summoned him, that means we've got something bigger than Garm on our hands," Piper said.
"Stop! The prophecy...we know one part of it's done alreayd. Will said Alice would 'tame the hound' or somethign like that. Alice killed Garm, so that's done. But for me...he said I would 'defeat the rock' or something like that...Does that mean I had to kill Asag?!" I asked Piper, a shuder of fear lancing into me.
"I...I think it does," she said, nodding.

MAX'S POV
"Alright, well...then we'll fight a gigantic rock demon...I see no problem with that," Kevin said.
"Yeah, but this time, there's no leaves to help us," Alice said. I cringed in fear.
"Alice is right...but we defeated Osebo without leaves? We took down Imdugud through strategy! We defeated the Earthbishops with intelligence! We can find some way to bring down Asag. But first, I suggest that we move out into the wild to prevent damage to the chateau and to the regular humans," Jack said.
"Sounds good. We should go tell Mr. Kiase that we're leaving," I said, getting up to exit.
Standing right in front of me and blocking my way out was the same man I had just wanted go leave to tell. Mr. Kiase gave a grim smile. I nearly punched him in the face, but Kevin yelled "HOW DID YOU FIND US!!!"
"Again, children, I have my ways. Feel free to leave. I won't stop you. Max, also, you're free to take that encyclopedia from the library if you need it. Good luck, children," Mr. Kiase said.
And with that, we prepared to leave.
