What if there was a bit more meaning and purpose to the forms of Nightmare and Dream? Passive Nightmare represents the negative emotions associated with nervousness, hesitation, and wariness. The little things that make sure we don't walk across the street without looking both ways and feel enough guilt to have self control. Corrupted Nightmare represents terror, hatred, and paranoia. The blinding emotions of negativity that could sink others into depression and vengeance and all kinds of trauma.
Dream represents joy, love, and to give hopes and the little meanings in life. Shattered Dream represents those to the extreme by obsessions, sadistic pleasures, and addictions.
The dual states of being were meant to exist as the extremes and minority of emotions. When Dream becomes Shattered Corrupted is forced to become Passive to balance it out. Passive gives Shattered the emotions of guilt and hesitation to stabilize the obsessiveness. When Corrupted comes back Dream is there to pull him from the hate and depression. Shattered pushes through Passives hesitation and nervousness with his single mindedness. Corrupted makes Dream weary of the dangers of the world and stand against deception.
They keep each other in check emotionally as they are forced between these states depending on who is who.
(Just a thought if Dream and Nightmare were more balanced. The tree of feelings was the balance keeper before it died so it found a new state of balance in Dream and Nightmare. They didn't know about this problem until Shattered came into exist and they were forced between forms.)
