Basically when Nightmare ate the apples Nightmare technically dies. The negativity left behind was a parasite that took the name Nightmare. But since there is a rule in the multiverse that made it impossible for beings like Nightmare and Dream or else the multiverse would fall, the essence of the true Nightmare became a ghost.
Like a Chara though they needed someone to attach themselves to. That someone was Error who in this multiverse went insane in the antivoid and wasn't actually a god here just a mad destroyer of aus. The uncorrupted Nightmare became attached to Error's glitched up soul. Nightmare tries to help Error to become sane again.
(I just like the idea of a gentle Nightmare trying to guide Error back to sanity. Error snapping at Nightmare. Nightmare gently coaxing Error to reawaken his memories as Geno and get him to stop destroying aus. Tempting him with chocolate and other treats.)
(Also could be a comedy duo Nightmare can be sarcastic and dead pan at Error while interrupting Error's moments of triumphs and battles)
